They may well not get charged but they have no legal defense for exceeding speed limits or breaking the road rules. I don't know if that's because it's a volunteer service or if it's a general rule regarding emergency services but it's something to consider. That may be a decision by St Johns management but the Road User Rules describe the exemption from speed limits in these terms "the vehicle was an emergency vehicle being used in an emergency and was operating a red beacon or a siren, or both;" no mention about who may drive. Exceeding the speed limit but not dangerous driving is the balancing act. |

Exceeding the speed limit but not dangerous driving is the balancing act. Might be able to clear this up 5 years as a volunteer Firefighter I picked a few things up hence this complaint. Drivers of ambulances and responding fire can only use red beacons and sirens if they are approved drivers. Otherwise normal road speeds apply these approved drivers must undertake a Response Driver Course and refresher courses. Unofficially you can bend the rules regarding lights at the decison of a senior person but normal road rules must be obeyed. The problem in this case is the driver is technically employed by the council (even though a volunteer) and not part of the New Zealand Rural Fire Authority hence no response driver training. He was aking some risks for what? His statement states they were responded to a scrub fire at 1130am. The incident occured at 1239 pm 31 kms south hence the lack of urgency. The fire by this time under control by NZ Fire Service personell. These facts convieniantly ignored with that defence of the exemption. Certainly was not rapid reponse required. |

| 1337073 | 2013-05-07 09:01:00 | This thread brings back memories . Many years ago in my Contracting Days we were laying a pipeline across a road . We had all the appropriate signage out, but few, if any, took a blind bit of notice . Anyway, towards the end of the day this bus comes thundering down the hill, probably gathering speed to get up the other side without changing gear . The young fellow working in the trench doing the pipe laying had had a gutsful of this so he threw his crowbar like a javelin at the bus . He was hellishly strong . (and still is) Well, you wouldnt read about it, but the crowbar went straight through the spokes of the duals at the back of the bus . The bus pig rooted up the road making a hell of a noise and eventually shuddered to a holt . By then my crowbar had come flying out so I retrieved that and we carried on as though nothing had happened . :) I couldnt tell you what the damage to the bus was, but my crowbar had a hell of a bend and it was a decent size bar . Ive kept the bar and the young fellow turns 65 soon so Ill give it to him for a present . Heres a photo of it . :D |

Clicking the link just wanted more information eg address and phone number and a digital signature which not got a clue how that can be done. So none the wiser my theory is someone was stalking me and complained and I klnow the driver of the vehicle was online at the time...lol. Facebook was reacting fast to complaints that day it seems. |
