There were a number of amendments prior to the law being passed which protected NZ'ers and their ability to still openly and candidly discuss their views on same-sex marriages, which protects all of NZ'ers right to freedom of speech, amongst other things, and while I'm not sure how well the clauses will protect things like celebrants, ministers and churches who don't want to marry same-sex couples because it goes against their religious views (Which they're entitled to), I think the steps were made to indicate that was the "spirit" of the law, even if it wasn't the exact letter of it. Good on them though, and I hope this promotes more tolerance and acceptance within our country. It would seem it is sorely needed...celebrants have been able to refuse for the last 50 years based on religion, and forced marriages. So nothing has changed there |
