1358876 2013-11-06 00:02:00 The HDD on my Asus N20A notebook has taken to revving flat out, and is causing me a bit of concern. Is this an indication that it is about to fail? and/or is there something I can do to avert disaster?

1358877 2013-11-06 00:47:00 The actual hard drive? Or do you mean CPU fan?

If you mean fan, it could be that something is overheating and the controller is setting the fan speed up high to try and cool it down, probably without success.

Try something like SpeedFan and try to find the actual temperature. Could be the heatsink is full of dust, the thermal interface material has degraded, or the cooler has come loose (did you drop it recently?)

That or the controller is broken and it's just going full tilt for no good reason.

1358878 2013-11-06 00:48:00 Are you sure it's the HDD and not just a cooling fan?
Cooling vents can get clogged up with dust and make fans behave like that, in which case it just needs a clean out.

1358879 2013-11-06 01:11:00 Yes of course, it is the fan. I will try the cleaning thing, Thanks guys. theother1 (3573)
1358880 2013-11-06 22:39:00 Having a similar experience on my now 5 year old N50Vc, on which I have just replaced a failing HDD.

Is there anywhere I can find out what temperature = bad and what range is acceptable (before I take it to a shop for servicing)?

1358881 2013-11-06 23:23:00 Have you ever cleaned it? At 5 years old I would expect dust buildup to be a likely possibility Agent_24 (57)
1358882 2013-11-06 23:42:00 It has been serviced once, a couple of years ago IIRC. Probably time to clean it again, although the fan is not easily accessible, so might take it in next week....

It normally sits on a desk (in a carpeted room)...

1358883 2013-11-07 00:57:00 Thermal interface material can also dry out\degrade. Agent_24 (57)
1358884 2013-11-07 02:35:00 The weird thing is the fan seems to run flat out when the screen is OFF - and only when it's off.

When I move the mouse and view the screen again, the fan speed drops from 6900rpm to about 3700rpm...

1358885 2013-11-07 04:49:00 It normally sits on a desk (in a carpeted room)... Fans can clog up rather quick, if you have any pets in the house it is even worse. Airborne dust can soon build up in devices that suck air in.

It can also be caused by programs running in the background making the Drive and CPU work, causing a heat build up = Fans kick in more.
