223694 2004-03-19 10:18:00 There are two houses with 3 computers in each. One has a DSE ADSL Router & the other a D-Link DSL504 Router.
Both Routers are set to "Automatic IP selection, as are all the computers.
5 computers have Win XP and 1 has ME.
All the XP computers run on Automatic with no problems, but the ME computer works on Auto OK with the DSE Router but not with the DSL504 Router. I have to use a manual setting & then it is OK.
My question is, why does the ME box work on Auto with the DSE Router & not the DSL504? All the others are on Automatic without problems.

223695 2004-03-19 10:32:00 Why use the DHCP anyway?

I always configure my networks for manual IP addresses. That way I can do more advanced configurations like virtual server, VPN etc. You can't do half the stuff you can do with manual IP configuration.

Also a static lan IP must improve searching for network files as the computer doesn't have to keep updating to look for the new location of a computer when the network goes down or you reboot a computer,

223696 2004-03-20 01:58:00 Perhaps the DSE software has a correct interpretation of the DHCP standard and the D-Link doen't. Or vice versa. Or MS XP has the correct interpretation and MS ME hasn't. Or vice versa. :D

Anyway, with small numbers of computers, it's best to used fixed IP addresses. That way, any cockups are your own. Not automatically made cockups. ;-) The difference is that when you fix your own errors, they stay fixed.

223697 2004-03-21 15:02:00 I think that the D-Link router is not set up correctly. The owner has forgotten his password & I can't be bothered to look (pin in hole). They are working which is the main thing. Mzee (158)
