223615 2004-03-19 03:58:00 While doing the rounds of schools in Marlborough I was disappointed to see that the shiny new purple Toshiba Notebooks arriving in schools lacked a Firewire port.

They get a good review in the lates PCWorld.co.nz magazine, but they also felt that a lack of firewire or IEEE-1394 was a minus.
I'm mainly thinking video capture issues.

I assume that not all is lost to those without Firewire.
Would purchasing a USB cable with a IEEE-1394 plug at the other end do the job?
USB 2.0 ports should be quick enough I think...

I haven't tested this out yet, so if anybody knows something that I'm missing, let me know. The cables are $29 - $40 (sighted at - Harvey Norman).
Is a video capture card necessary to capture video?

It is possible to buy video capture cards for less than $200. But is that needed?

223616 2004-03-19 04:03:00 USB-Firewire cables wouldn't work, unless there was some kind of "box" in the middle of it to convert firewire signals to USB, and for a driver in the computer to regocnise it as a firewire device.

You can get USB video-capture devices (approx $200 I think), which apart from having Firewire, also have analog video/sound input.
