2004-03-18 02:41:00 | I have an old Celeron 466 on an Intel CA810 M/B. When I turn it on there is no display at all. Power to the M/B seems fine. I have tried disconnecting all parts one at a time to see if one is causing this problem. I have even bought another M/B (second hand) of the same type with the same results! The only two things I can think of is a) the CPU or b) the second M/B has the same problem. Question 1. Would a faulty CPU stop you from seeing BIOS setup or any display at all? Question 2. Any ideas at all?

2004-03-18 02:54:00 | A faulty CPU will stop any form of boot-up. BIOS code cannot be run if the CPU is not working. The BIOS is only code, with no way of executing without an active CPU. Power supply can stop the CPU from booting as well. If the Power_OK line from the Power Supply Unit does not indicate that the supply voltages are within specifications correct, then the CPU is halted and never boots. Therefore the BIOS code never runs.

2004-03-18 04:25:00 | It is not clear from your post as to whether the PC is still booting up? If it is (with no display) then it might be as simple as a fuse in the monitor - unfortunately not an item for most users to fix themselves! I have just had one fixed (and checked out) for $32.50. | JohnD (509) | |

2004-03-18 05:42:00 | I have tried several monitors - same result. No boot up at all. H/Drive seems to start. CD ROM drive opens. Tried starting with a floppy boot disk - didn't appear to try to read it (Floppy might not be in the startup sequence, I don't know - it was not my PC).

2004-03-18 05:49:00 | I'm fairly sure I have tested with another power supply (it's been gathering dust for about 6 months as I couldn't fix it then and got fed up) but I will try again. Then that would leave only the CPU I guess. Cheers.
