Perhaps that would work for the PC savvy, but most people who'd use NZOOM.com / TVNZ would just like to go to the page and browse it from there. Or should they provide a(nother) bandwidth hogging demo on that intro page to show people how to find out what their screen resolution is set to? Mike. |

| 223686 | 2004-03-23 04:31:00 | Here is some news about the new tvnz website: From computerworld - computerworld.co.nz Tuesday, 23 March, 2004 No end in sight for site TVNZ's Nzoom replacement remains offline Paul Brislen, Auckland Nearly a year after the announcement of its axing, TVNZ's website Nzoom is still online while staff at the broadcaster's Interactive arm struggle to get its successor to work. In May last year TVNZ announced it was going to close down nzoom.com and replace it with tvnz.co.nz, a site whose content would be more closely aligned with the public broadcaster's TV programming. The replacement site was supposed to be introduced in October last year, but problems with the technology used to implement the site have meant it was delayed, supposedly until February. Online executive producer Glyn Jones now says the site will launch in the very near future. "We're getting there but still not quite. I'm hopeful that it will be sorted out by [the end of this week]." Jones won't elaborate on the problems except to say that "there are some technical issues". "It's quite different in the way that it's set up from anything else that's been done in New Zealand before. Certainly it hasn't been as straightforward as we were hoping, but the last thing we want to do is have something launch that doesn't work." In October TVNZ said it would be using a combination of Cocoon, an open source offering, for its front-end delivery, coupled with Vignette version 6.0 managing the back-end database. "From a content and design point of view it's totally sweet, but as far as functionality goes we've got a few final things we have to work through," says a frustrated Jones, who wouldn't commit to a timetable for the launch. Nzoom won the Qantas Media Awards' inaugural website of the year award in June last year. |

Well actually you can make a small script (seen it done in perl) to automatically detect the user's screen resolution. Best of both worlds :D |
