223464 2004-03-18 04:12:00 Running Win2k with an hp and epson printer installed. On both printers at the print screen window it always shows 1-65535 as pages to print. If I change to 1 it prints OK, but any idea why the 65535 comes up initially?
Cheers

223465 2004-03-18 04:26:00 Because youi can select a range of pages to print . Since usually you want to print the whole file the defaults are set to 1 and "a big number" .

65535 is (2^16)- 1 which is a lot of pages . I doubt if anyone has complained that it's not big enough . Yet .

It won't keep printing blank pages untilit has counted to 65535 after it hits the end of the file . I don't think so, anyway . ;-)

223466 2004-03-18 04:26:00 the number 65536 is 2^8

8 bit to the byte.

a byte can hold 65535 as the maxiumu number.

why it happens i dont know.

all i can explane is the number.

223467 2004-03-18 04:27:00 er......

my fault (core dumped)

2^16 would be 65536, 2^8 is only 256

223468 2004-03-18 04:44:00 True Grahamn - only prints the 1, but takes forever spooling thinking theres that amount to print if I forget to manually change to 1. Wondered why it happened, never seen it on a printer before.

223469 2004-03-18 04:57:00 Mmmm . I've just looked here . This one gives radio buttons with All/ Current/ Select Page/Pages: with a window with "1" in it . That has a tiny note saying to enter a number or to enter a range . This is (I think) WinCe from a NT server . . . (library computer --- OS downloaded, locked uptight) . I must try one of the ones upstairs which have W2k .

It shouldjust stop when it hits end of file, anyway . . . there's nothing to wait for .

Of course, an octet holds 256 values (0-255) and a 16 bit word holds 65536 values(0-65535) . That has caused many hours of debugging when people have forgotten about the "off by 1" array indexing problem . :D
