2004-03-20 04:40:00 | It's noisy, rattly, and it's quite positvely hideous! It also has a bad design, and my second optical drive can't fit all the way in either the second or third 5.25" bay because it would hit the RAM (AMD mobo FIC SD11). So the time has come to replace the old case. Money is not bountiful, so something cheap and cheerful. I currently use a 250W PSU, so at least a 300W is necessary for when I eventually upgrade other things. I would also like something that isn't beige! Black, silver, or combinations thereof - even blue, if it was tasteful. Some of the brands I've spied include Excel (any bad stories?), Golden Field, and Hyena. One day, when I build my next computer, I will be using a top of the range case, so it doesn't have to be particularly flash - just serviceable and reasonably quiet and attractive. Any thoughts? If anybody knows of a specific model they can recommend, that'd be great. Lizard

2004-03-20 05:10:00 | I have an icute. It was ~$100 with PSU. Good price. Roomy. Relatively well built. The PSU was of reasonable quality, but ran very loud. My only complaint is they didn't leave a lot of room to let air in at the front, there isn't enough to keep an 80mm fan happy let alone 120mm.

2004-03-20 05:40:00 | i know someone who unfortunatly has had one of those out of spec cases before. unfortunatly they broke the mobo installing another cd drive :) icute..basic layout ok but not a good psu. hyena......crap. antec are quite nice. lian-li........very nice but not cheap. aopen.....not bad well built but some need a bit of tweaking. psu good but hard to find one with big (350+ watt) psu.

2004-03-20 05:40:00 | What ever you do stay away from Hyena . They are quite cheap in price but for long term service I wouldn't recommend it, I had to replace mine twice and in the end I switched to an I-Cute ATX case and PSU with a side perspex window and I haven't had any problems with it . Moral of the story: It is ALWAYS worth spending more money on something . . . . quality almost always comes at a higher price than usual . I would rather pay a little bit more for a quality product that continuously have to replace "EL CHEAPO" parts all the time . cheers chiefnz

2004-03-20 07:30:00 | The alternative would be to buy a second hand case on trademe.co.nz that way you could (if you buy something compatible) just transfer your harddrive from one to the other and that way keep your data intact - backup anything vital of course. Plus the "new" unit could be robbed for it's ram and anything extra you need - just be picky on what you bid for.

2004-03-20 07:58:00 | How much is too much? A freind has this case (www.ascent.co.nz) only in beige and I beleive they paid $100 more than that price for it sometime last year. It has good reviews on hardware sites as well so would be a good investment. | Fire-and-Ice (3910) | |
2004-03-20 09:35:00 | I've built around 30 systems using i cute cases and I have only ever had one with a poor power supply. There is a huge range of i cute models and some do have less than perfect ventilation but they are a solid basic and reliable case. Olympic brand cases which are identical clones of some i cute models can have dodgy power supplies. | the highlander (245) | |
