223863 2004-03-25 11:39:00 Hi Slim
In spite of its so-called "logic," this computer language can be confusing stuff.
I'm still fairly new at it, but have already learned - the hard way - that there's a Start Menu & there's StartUp & there's Startup... And they're all different.
The one I referred to shows the programmes which are loaded on your computer in such a way that they start every time you boot up. Obviously some are vital for its running, but it's easy to acquire others which merely clog up the system & slow your computer down.

(They'll start OK when needed, but don't have to be there all the time.
- and that applies to Running Processes as well, of course)
There are several ways of checking. The simplest is:
Start > Run > Type msconfig in box> Click OK> Click Startup tab in box.

The entries which are ticked will show you what starts up each time for you. You can untick any you don't want running constantly. Some may be confusing. (There are ways of finding out what they are for, but that's a different subject). Just untick anything obvious - and in this context, tell us if any probably came from the MS CD.
Just as a vague (very vague) guide, I have 13 ticked usually.

The Tasks I mentioned are actually Running Tasks/Processes (Yours would be Task Scheduler or somesuch, which relates to maintenance programmes).
To see these, hit 3 keyboard keys at the same time. They are Ctrl, Alt & Delete.
That will bring up a list of what's running on your computer at the moment e.g. Press F1 will be there, plus any other windows you have open. Once again, some may be puzzling, but has MS left you anything obvious you didn't think you were using at present?

Enough for the moment. Sorry if this is too basic for words, but I found most of this stuff confusing not so long ago (And heaps more still confusing) so I hope it helps someone new who reads this thread.

And if any of the real experts out there want to add.....?

223864 2004-03-25 11:41:00 Me again. I still can't get mine to update my master machine but it updated my other two XP Pro machines fine. I have also used it successfully to update client's machines (win98) so that is great.

All-in-all, it is a huge benefit to me but it is annoying not knowing why just one of my machines won't update.

223865 2004-03-25 23:56:00 Hi Laura,
Many thanks for your helpful comments, we can all learn a bit more each day.

Ctl+Alt+Del shows me the following;
Press F1
Inbox-Outlook Express
Explorer
Rnaapp
E_sicn03
Avgcc32
Kmaestro
Systray
Avgserv9
Stimon

All appear to be normal.
----------------------------
Start/Run/msconfig/Startup tab/
12 items, all look logical & all ticked.
None of these are anything like your extra ones.

Once again thanks for your input.

223868 2004-04-10 03:58:00 Not sure if it is related to the update, but I can't get into any IE stuff that runs javascript.

Neither have I, Neil, and I did get a confirmation email from MS . :-(

Some people who ordered theirs quite a while after me got their CDs long ago .

Looks like I might have to order another one . . . . . and hope they still have some left . :O

Anyone else still waiting?
