With only 19 replies it looks as though not many in NZ have bothered to ask for them. What does this tell you about the average security outlook

223854 2004-03-24 12:20:00 Hi Slim

I wouldn't take too much from the number of replies as yet.

There was not only a great deal of interest in the initial thread on this subject (gerrypics posted on 21 Feb), but there have been 2 more since - one relating to how many people have received their CDs & another relating to who hasn't. And some people have only just caught up with news of the offer.
If you check those threads out, you'll see plenty of interest.

As for actual reviews, there's no time limit on posting...

I have to confess I haven't run my own CD yet (So much for an example!)

That's because I know my security patches are up to date & I have an anti-virus, so there seemed no reason to hurry. There will be plenty of others in the same boat, I assume.
(And maybe we're being a bit cautious - waiting for others to warn of any problems in advance. Some might say cowardly - but I couldn't possibly comment....)

Anyway, you've given me the incentive to have a burst - tomorrow.

If you check out the thread asking who has yet to receive their CD you might find that most of the people who would be itching to test it are still waiting for it. ;-) :D

OK Laura, tomorrow is here. How did it go? ]:) :D

223857 2004-03-24 23:54:00 Oho, Susan - still "itching to test it" . So -obviously yours still hasn't arrived?
Okay, you shamed me into it this morning, although I was planning to do it tonight .
For me, it brought good news & bad news, but I guess I'd better start with the general stuff . (This is only the update CD . I haven't tried the antivirus one . )
Firstly, it contains not only security updates, but the latest versions (6) of Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Windows Media Player 9 & DirectX9b . However, it doesn't give you choices to skip any of these (or not that I saw beforehand), so you get the lot - like it or not . Some people may find Add & Remove helpful later . , as there's no warning of this . And not everyone wants a new Media Player icon on the desktop . . .
The good news is that it whips through these installs so speedily & smoothly that it's all done in no time .
(Mind you, I already had practically all of this stuff, so little to update, I guess)
Two things surprised me . One was purely personal: the Outlook Express update reinstated my MSOE . DLL (Catastrophe related in an earlier thread . Will haul that back later for a follow-up) Needless to say, I was delighted .
But the 2nd surprise was a right pain - which I hope won't be a huge nuisance
I have Win98SE, which the CD obviously did some kind of update on also .
But for some reason, it hasn't finished that job, but left 2 dialog boxes which wouldn't go away & allow me to shut down correctly . Then they bobbed up again when I rebooted (just before the Dialup box)

And now I've mislaid the paper I wrote their details on, so will have to post this first & reboot to try again . . .

LOL. Well she will have to wait until I receive mine first. :D

223859 2004-03-25 00:17:00 Well done, Laura - nice review . :-)

I hope it still does the job nice and quick after a format because reapplying all those updates takes forever the manual way .

Hope you can fix the little hiccup that occurred - I can't be of any help with that, sorry .

223860 2004-03-25 00:32:00 Here are my problem "leftovers."

They are 2 horizontal dialog boxes which appear on top of each other fractionally after the Dialup box.
Top left side says: Advanced INF Install
Below that is a white cross in a red circle.
The messages are identical except for the 2nd last word.

Error could not locate INF file 'D:\content\win9x\Win98SE\WSEresume.inf.
Where one says resume, the other says finish.

I can get rid of them by clicking OK.
Are these things "unfinished business" which would go if I ran the CD again?
Or is there a way to delete them? Are they a minor irritation or a major problem? Can I use them as an excuse to sue Bill Gates? (Dream on.....)
Advice please.

BTW Am interested to know whether anybody else saw info/choices on what to install once the CD started. Was there something I missed?

223861 2004-03-25 01:16:00 Further investigation shows 2 new duplicate entries in my Startup Programs:
rundll32 advpack dll.LaunchINFsec
One is called Finishing Win & the other is Continuing Win

More to the point for others - I find Windows Media Player has tucked itself into my Running Tasks uninvited.

So - as suggested earlier in this thread = it would pay to check both for new hitch-hikers.

223862 2004-03-25 08:37:00 Hi Laura,
I do not remeber seeing any options of what to install or not, and just went with the program. Also do not recollect any dialog boxes not closed.
In Wind/Start Menu/Programs/StartUp/ I only have 2 items, Epsom Status Monitor and Microsoft Office.
Where are yours.
In Tasks I only have Tune-up Applic. programme.

I would think there is no reason why you could not rerun the disc and try again if you wish to.
