223956 2004-03-20 21:52:00 May I ask what you have in your system? And remind you also to keep it friendly... no need to tell people to "go back to your cave."

FWIW, I disagree with you... too many other factors there and the performance you get from the money you need to spend doesn't justify the price.

You can achieve more by switching your system to a Raid 0 set-up, small overclocks of the CPU and video card (Intel and nVidia are good at these) all without spending a cent.

Which brings us back to the point: performance vs cost. I'd rather save the money and buy an Enermax 550W power supply.

223957 2004-03-20 23:10:00 for oderanry users the amount of ram is often more important than the CAS . however for a hardcore gamer wanting max speed then CAS is very important .

btw you can get CAS2 generic ram you just have to know what your looking for .

a cheap way to get CAS2 ram is to buy gneric ram thats at a higher speed . eg buy dddr400 and run it at ddr333 . normaly the slower speed setting will run at better CAS .

however if you are tweaking every last amount of speed out of the ram then i would go get a god brand name that you know will handle running at high speed without causeing errors .

223958 2004-03-21 03:03:00 Stay away from geil its known to have problems, you would be wise to spend your money on a better video card. The FX5600 arent exactly known for their awsome preformance. It would also be wise to buy a card with 128mb as they are cheaper and the preformanced gained from the extra is not worth the extra money. The Prolink/Pixalview Geforce FX5900XT is probably the best buy at the moment offering 20-30% better preformance over the simarly priced ATI Radeon 9600XT. If your into overclocking the Prolink/Pixalview card is a proven preformer. Have a look at this you might find it amusing:

If your really keen on some new ram Twinmos make some RAM with Winbond chips that if you run at a lower speed should be capable of lower CAS latencies. e.g DDR400 down to DDR333. Seeing as you have a 3000+ this might be a good option, unless your overclocking.

223959 2004-03-21 06:11:00 Just thought i might add that generic run of the mill ddr has a cas of 2.5 anyway. metla (154)
223960 2004-03-21 07:57:00 Well, I, personally, cannot afford anymore than I have. I do, however, run 400Mhz RAM at 333, as it was suggested. But IMHO, I doubt that the difference would be significant, between Generic and Branded ram. Sure, there ARE performance gains, but as metla said, for the extra price is it really really that worth it??

I mean i guess we are talking first person shooters here, and I doubt that a CAS of 2 vs 2.5 would really get you that many more kills....

But on a different note, I would buy it to feel cool and show off to my pathetic excuse for a bunch of friends (no offense to them), where, as in most nerd/geek circles, it's always about what you have. I mean really, I'd rather have 1024MB generic, than 512MB Branded .
