223770 2004-03-20 21:15:00 The best advice I can give anyone BEFORE they are burgled is to go around your house with a video camera and record EVERYTHING. Open cupboards etc and get it all on tape. Quite often after we were burgled we would only notice things missing after a few months. This was damn annoying as it was often too late to make another claim but the value was just enough to put us out of pocket. i.e 2 backpacks taken in one burglary, replaced them at $80 each which left a hole in our paypacket but wasn't worth claiming by the time we lost excess etc and we didn't notice them missing from the back of the cupboard untill we went away 3 months later.
DON'T store the tape at your house however and DO NOT label the tape with names and addresses. I update mine every 6 months or so and swap with friends of ours.

Don't leave windows open with "securistays" as these take 3 seconds with a screwdriver to get past.

Leave your curtains open and tell the neighbours that if they see them closed during the day while you are no there to call the cops. Every time we were burgaled they closed the curtains.

Store video tapes that are priceless (wedding etc) AWAY from your video recorder/camera. Those are the one main thing I miss and cannot be replaced.

Etch serial numbers into the back of valuable items or even better etch your name.

Don't set up stereos etc in plain view from the road. If they can't see it they don't know if your place is worthwhile.

DO NOT leave a spare key outside, get to know a neighbour and swap. Leave your spare at their place and visa versa if you need a spare.

Get to know your neighbour. One burglary I asked if anyone had seen anything strange and the new neighbour across the road had watched the buggers pull up and wander around the back of the house. Quote "I saw nothing strange only your flatmate coming home after work at about 10am" We had no flatmate.
Another time and another neighbour spotted the closed curtains and a strange car so called the cops. Only damage was a broken window.

Last count was 10 burglaries within the Auckland area but I put this down to the fact I was doing all the deliveries and installs for Harvey Norman for many many years and had the truck parked up at home. I also did all the insurance replacement for several insurance companies so haveheard all the stories.

223771 2004-03-20 21:47:00 we aren't likely to get burgled during the day. we have the ultimate burglar alarm.

2 Dogs

also we have an alarm from F.B.I* which we use for holiday. it actually calles the police for us. and it calles the fire departmant for us as well.

*I can provide the phone number if you want

223772 2004-03-20 22:07:00 Just a thought - I understand from friends who have been advised of this by Police investigating a burglary, that burglars are aware that you will probably replace everything with new items on insurance shortly after the burglary .

You are therefore an attractive target to hit again .

Vigilance is therefore important in the coming months, especially if you have been hit by career burglars as opposed to random thieves .

223773 2004-03-20 22:30:00 One of the best ways to avoid being burgled is to not advertise the fact that you are going away . By all means tell the neighbours and trusted friends but don't expect your house to be untouched if you make a habit of telling anyone who will listen, particularly down the local pub . I know of two people who got done over after most likely being overheard at their local .

Another way is to try not to make it so obvious that the house is empty . Put your lights and maybe the radio on timers, get your neighbour to park their car in your drive, etc .

Does anyone have an address for lion rentals?
We hope to cover the costs by "used sneaker" sales.

223775 2004-03-20 23:49:00 Average insurance replacement time is 2 to 4 weeks. Some canny burglars will steal old goods in the hope of picking up the model they are actually after when you get it replaced by insurance. dipstick01 (445)
223776 2004-03-21 03:20:00 How about publishing photos of burglars here. Some one might recognise them.
I am going to install a vidio card in an old hidden computer that captures screen shots from a minature camera. Will be real keen to put those on the net.

223777 2004-03-21 05:16:00 You can give some amusement to your local TV repair shop and annoy the burglars by engraving across the back of every item "STOLEN FROM YOUR NAME AND YOUR ADDRESS" FrankS (257)
