2004-03-21 04:49:00 | I have a IBM T40 Laptop, when i put a Belkin Firewire Cardbus adapter into the card slot, windows XP Pro auto install the driver (which is listed the name "NEC OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller") then it gave an error on the device under Network adapters "1394 Net Adapters". | 224098 | 2004-03-21 05:04:00 | Umm. The OHCI means the adaptor is a USB 1 device, which might not run Firewire at full speed. But even if the laptop has a USB 2.0 socket, the USB 1 device should still work. Backwars compatibility and all that. :D | Graham L (2) | |
2004-03-21 09:00:00 | thanks, um..what should i do now to make the card work? The IEEE 1394 FireWire CardBus Adapter says it had a chipset called "NEC FireWarden Chipset". Hopes it works.

2004-03-21 09:08:00 | i think i got sold a macintosh (apple) version of the firewire cardbus adapter b/c one of the numbers on the card says F5U512-MAC!! | robert_m_r_w (3943) | |
2004-03-22 04:23:00 | That card does appear to be intended for the Macintosh.;-) My identification of OHCI as a slow interface was wrong.:-( I was influenced by struggles with USB on one of my systems. It seems that OHCI covers FireWire too, and it's 400 Mbps with that. USB needs EHCI or UHCI for 480Mbps. There's a nice description of OHCI here (www.puremotion.com) . OHCI is supposed to make standard software automatically able to use the device. That is, it shouldn't need special drivers. That 's presumably why the Mac needs 100 MB of disk for the special software (drivers?) .:D

As soon as i reliase that card is not a mac version, i quickly log in this morning but the entire PressF1 sever doesn't like to seem to response (or at least at the Auckland Uni computers!). Anyway, back to the question, so OHCI had in-build drivers for windows, so why doesn't it detch the driver and the card when i put the firewire card into the bay? Now it seem i have two chioce: 1) bring back the card to gamma com shop in newton rd and ask for my money back 2) somehow make this card work! Any others ideas, guys? But thanks for the link Graham! |
