224079 2004-03-21 01:55:00 Hi guys

I'm sort of doing this research about Children's safety on the net. I came across a 2 questions that i found really hard to find answer to, hopefully you guys could give me some tips or answer to these questions. All these related to the internet and child safety on the net.

1) How many web pages are there on the net? (1 site i got said around 3 billion when it was 2000 and its growing by 700million pages per day)

2) How man percent of those billions of web pages are XXX or not apporiate for a child to see? (i mean that like stuff like rotten.com etc, i remmeber from somewhere it said there was 81% of the net is full of XXX and bad stuff, though that was quite a while ago).

I tried google, though i couldnt get any results that were relevant to those questions. I also tried netguide.co.nz though it didnt contain the answers to those question but to some of my other questions.

Any comments or suggestions about children safety on the net would great too.

Thanks alot

I might be wrong here, but I don’t think any one does know how many web pages/ sites they is on the www

224082 2004-03-21 06:45:00 Google states that it searches 4,285,199,774 web pages,i think doubling that amount would be a fair guess.

The amount of adult sites and sites with offensive material would be a tiny amount overall.

Tiny tiny tiny.

224083 2004-03-21 07:02:00 A good definition of the internet I once saw was "the world's greatest library surrounded by the world's greatest flea market". If you want to filter out some of the inappropriate stuff in the flea market use:
1. Squid proxy with squid guard
2. Something like Netnanny.
3. Use an ISP that does the filtering for you (e.g. Maxnet).

The first one is really for a local area network.

224084 2004-03-21 07:47:00 I did a huge project on the Internet, and the history of it was one part. The teacher has it, but i remember that I searched for "History" and "internet" and it gave me the rough amount of sites out there. Ofcourse these aren't webpages, these are domains. Then again somepeople don't register domains, they use IP addresses. Growly (6)
224085 2004-03-21 09:01:00 yes a lot of sites will never be registered on search engines either so ....... drcspy (146)

Thanks everyone for their comments and tips ^^

224087 2004-03-22 13:34:00 I've seen estimates of total number of pages online around 16 billion.

Try dropping these guys (http://www.netsafe.org.nz) an email with your query.

Or here (www.icra.org), or here (http:)
