| 223970 | 2004-03-20 13:43:00 | My question is how is it so hard to have a computer update with a time server every hour/day?? Here I'll pseudo code it for you. #include timeserver IF (time == wrong) { update_useless_pressf1_time_with_timeserver; } Done! |

| 223971 | 2004-03-20 20:55:00 | Computers only synchronise with a time server if they are less than 10 seconds out (something like that), otherwise the difference is considered too much, and possibly purposely implemented. | agent (30) | ||
| 223972 | 2004-03-20 21:04:00 | kiki> Sorry to bust ya bubble, but somebody did a better job and wrote the ntp protocol ;-) I spoke with an Admin from IDG earlier last week and suggested a cron job to sync with a local ntp server, say, at 2am each day. I was told it would be looked into this week. Obviously if they choose not to do that, it is at their discretion. Laura> Its not _quite_ as simple as double-clicking on the clock in the taskbar and adjusting the time. You could run into issues with posts being in front of one another etc. and then you'd have problems. Chill. |

I thought it worked by NTP Servers sync'ing to GMT and then any client can request anything because it works on the timezone that the computer is set to - eg: My computer didn't set itself for Daylight Savings so I just sync'd with Ihugs time servers and it sent the hour back. |

Or they could just shutdown the site (or wait for it to crash again :-P), sync the time & wait ~20mins for it to catch up again before restarting it. Then again, apart from looking weird, might not actually break anything. |

That would be my solution as well - close PF1 down mid-morning for half an hour then reset the clock to the correct time. Easy. :-) How about tomorrow? :D |

| 223976 | 2004-03-21 07:38:00 | Hey Chill You had me really mystified there . Like - how did I get a reply like that from a two-word post? Now that the penny's dropped ( or I think it has), better explain . No, I didn't expect to change anything by double-clicking or whatever . It was supposed to be a hint to PF1's Gods-of-the-Clock, in case they merely changed it by Daylight Saving's one hour . And it was prompted by my own machine tidily changing over a few minutes earlier, with a dialog box from Microsoft telling me it had (Not a surprise, as even as a novice I'd found that setting to tick in the innards) Must admit I didn't realise getting the time right is more complex for this website - and I don't know what npt protocol is - but we learn a bit more each time . (Makes note to self - be clearer in my posts) |

Easy. :-) I usually check in around 2am and its all quiet then, that's the sorta thing that'd be best IMO, when it'll be least missed ;-) |
