224459 2004-03-23 03:50:00 I bought my Zire21 PDA about 6months ago from CampusIT at Auckland University.

I am in Blenheim doing short term work. The PDA *was* very useful for jotting down things on the move.

The PDA was at 50% battery power when it suddenly would not turn on. It was in a bag that had rain fall on it.

I'm not sure what has caused the PDA to go off. Has water got in and ruined the PDA? Or has the battery simply gone dead?

Is there a place in Blenheim (if not in Blenheim then Wellington) that can check this PDA for damage and if it can, fix the PDA?

I have charged the PDA for 3 hours, will charge it up for another 2 hours.

224460 2004-03-23 04:14:00 They are often not "repairable" and are replaced under warranty.

(Often are glued together, not even acessable in some models)

At 6 months old, it should be under warranty, provided that its not user negligence. Look on the Web for service agents.
Or phone Palm support 0800 449 539

Rain "falling on the bag" is unlikely to hurt the Palm
Rain falling on the Palm however ... ?

Welcome to PF1.

Rain falling in your bag could mean anything from a few drops on the outside of a waterproof satchel, to a tropical downpour saturating a cotton carrybag so you might like to be a bit more explicit about the chances of water contacting your PDA.

Faults caused by water in your PDA will not be covered by warranty, but if it is rainwater and did not pass through anything that might contaminate it there is a very good chance it will work if dried out.

I would charge it, because that will warm up the batteries and help dry it out, but I would not switch it on until you are sure it is thoroughly dried. Again, only you know exactly how wet it was!

If you think water will have got into it then try to put it on top of a hotwater cylinder or similar warm place and leave it there for two or three days. Then try again, and if it doesn't work, cross your fingers and make a warranty claim.

Cheers

Personally I wouldn't charge it as electricity + wet circuitry is definitely not a good mix.

Leave it somewhere warm like ye olde hot water cupboard or near somewhere sunnyish for a day or two.

Then charge it and see if it works.

My $0.02.

224464 2004-03-29 03:14:00 Thanks for the welcome to the PressF1 forum.

To give a bit more info:
The PDA was in the front pocket of a small backpack that I carried when some rain fell. The cover of the backpack was quite wet. I had bought the backpack from the Warehouse.

When I took the PDA out, it felt quite cold and a little damp. As said before, it was at 50% power and now it will not turn on.

I will try putting it in a dry place and then charge it up.

If that does not work, I will try having it checked by the repair person in Wellington.
