224312 2004-03-22 03:49:00 I notice on PriceSPY that cards from vary from $24 to $479........I expect to get more bang for my buck but what is the difference and is it worth it....I am running XP...... olldaddy76 (2539)
224313 2004-03-22 04:19:00 Well I have to say that's a pretty vague post. We can't give you any advice unless you tell us what sort of audio applications you are looking at. Are you wanting 5.1, dolby digital surround sound, DTS, and how many speakers do you want to use?

More importantly have you seen a card on Pricespy that you like, if so post it's specs along with what your audio requirements are and that would help us help you.

cheers

224314 2004-03-22 04:35:00 Sorry about the vagueness as it is based on my ignorance...I have three speakers and run Power DVD and radio as well as the usual CD listening.....and if this is not enough please advise.....thanks. olldaddy76 (2539)
224315 2004-03-22 04:44:00 the cheaper end of the range are ac97 chipsets(yeah yeah, lets not have someone point out its named after a codec) and they are identical to the ac97 chipsets commonly found intergrated into many motherboards. No use upgrading an onboard AC97 to a sound card based on AC97...unless your onboard is broken,or your after the cheapest possible solution to get 5.1.

Overall i rate ac97 has having pretty good audio quality with a shade to much of a hit on the cpu.

Other then that i would stick to the Soundblaster/audigy line of cards.

224316 2004-03-22 05:40:00 Soundblaster live value is good enough for most Purposes kiwibeat (304)
224317 2004-03-22 06:21:00 Totally agree,i would buy a soundblaster live 5.1 over the other cards anyday,Its a huge increase over inbuilt audio as far as quality goes and its featiure packed and takes a load off the cpu.

And the price is spot on.

The more expensive cards are obviously better but only in small increments over the sb live.

224318 2004-03-22 06:31:00 Hi,
I was recently asking about my soundcard because I couldn,t seem to find it on the computer.
Someone suggested that I may have a soundcard that was integrated into my mother board, (AC'97).
Are these really budget cards?, (just upgrading to a Audigy 2 ZS Soundcard for my new 7.1 Creative Speakers!!).

Thanks.

224319 2004-03-22 07:57:00 Depends on what you want to use it for. AC97's good for general purpose but if your into serious sound I'd suggest an independant card.

As stated earlier AC97 onboard can suck your cpu. Where as an independant card in the pci slot won't chew it up as much.

This is more noticable on music programs. For example I was using on board whilst mixing music on a program call Fruity Loops (v4), once I added more than 6 channnels the cpu started wacking out and the sound started chopping. Where as I switched to a Soundblaster Live 5.1 and not only does my cpu hardly get the suck down, but I can add a heap more sound channels with no chop.

Good luck,

224320 2004-03-22 11:43:00 Can I just go and buy any sound card to match the speakers or do I have to worry about wether it will fit in with my computer?? Ollie123 (4243)
224321 2004-03-22 11:45:00 as long as you have a spare PCI slot then it will fit. metla (154)
