224251 2004-03-21 21:54:00 Over the weekend I rebuilt my XP Home OS on C:. Everything went fine and the System Restore was operating.

After loading other software I rebooted. I then loaded ADware 6, Spybot and Kerio. I then rebooted and had the following error.

"C0000218 Registry file failure. \Systemroot\System32\Config\Software or its log or alternate is corupt, absent or not writeable".

I attempted to recover using System Restore but found that

1. I attempted to boot but couldn't.

2. I tried to use the XP CD to get the Repair Console but could not access it because of a further error "System32\Config\System"

I found I could do nothing but Format C: and start again. This time I re-loaded WIN98SE on C: and want to now try to put XP on the E: partition.

Any ideas on how I should have correctly handled this?

Bryan.

224252 2004-03-21 22:14:00 Usually means you have a damaged hard drive or incompatible hardware
Normally booting from the from the XP CD, running the Recovery console & running chkdsk /r would tell you if there is a problem with the drive or not but as you couldn't do that I'm blowed if I know
Sorry, not much help.
If you have Win98 successfully installed try running a full scandisk or better still hook the drive up to a system running XP & doing a scandisk from there.
