224239 2004-03-21 21:41:00 When I have Norton anti-virus 2002 loaded, I can't access the internet. On contacting Xtra, I was told that 2002 conflicts with their anti-virus software and the only way around it is to uninstall Norton. Has anyone else had this problem with either 2002 or later versions? shan (5426)
224240 2004-03-21 22:30:00 Hi, Shan,
Time I am able to give advice instead of always asking for it.;-)
That is correct- Norton's 2002 had to be uninstalled before v 2003 was installed- I am not sure whether this happens every year- I have used Nortons for longer than that and am very happy with it.
My version of Nortons 2003 will cease to be able to be updated within a month or so,(updated sometimes three times a day) so either way your 2002 version must by now be useless, and you could well be affected by a newer virus accordingly unless you are very careful- or lucky.

what a load of crap. what antivirus sytem you run has NOTHING to do with an ISP's antivirus system.

>That is correct- Norton's 2002 had to be uninstalled before v 2003 was installed

????? shan never mentioned anything about installing 2003 ???

nope guess again. provided it still gets updated it should be ok. old versions tend to get less effective as they get older as they are often not designed to handle some of the newer virus techneques (tho nortons sometimes does engine upgrades making it as effective as the latest versions). however i wouldn't consider 2002 as being to old.

do you have nortons firewall?

what OS?

otherwise uninstall nortons, clean everything out, repair net connection (depending on OS) then reinstall.

the other possiblity is you are infected with something. run an online virus check like housecall.

224243 2004-03-22 10:54:00 HI Steve

Whoa - I'm not about to lay into Eddie...I've seen *heaps* of NAV 2002 installs with Xtra as the ISP and no problems at all as far as actually accessing the net goes...their anti virus engine catches the viruses (virii?) before you even download your email, so how could it?
As per the words quoted above, what a load of crap.

224244 2004-03-22 11:09:00 Norton Antivirus 2002 will not work with XP, I had to get 2003.
The same updates are available for 2001,2002,2003 so long as your subscription is up to date. (there is a way round it, but the fee is quite reasonable). If you do a system reinstall the subscription is renewed.
If your Fire Wall is checking your Mail, disable the Mail scan in Norton, otherwise it locks up.

It has nothing to do with the ISP, and I wouldn't trust them to keep all virus out anyway.

good point. sometimesthe firewall can conflict with the email scanning. zonealarm for example mention this on their site. however it would be best to disable the firewall email section than the antivirus email section.

224246 2004-03-22 11:42:00 There has been no mention of a firewall being installed.

Since when has Norton 2002 had a firewall with it.
You can of course disable email scan in the Options

Would be interested to know if the problem is just with email or whether there is a problem with web sites as well.
