224981 2004-03-25 01:44:00 Greetings,

Ive been doing some PC repair work, here's a long story cut as short as possible:
The PC died, PSU, Mobo, and CPU.
We replaced these and after doing so, XP would hang while loading mup.sys.
I'd read up a bit on it and figured the best solution was to format.

We did.

Since formatting, the Primary Master drive (A 6.5GB HDD that once had Win2K on and is now used for backups - This wasnt formatted) isnt picked up by WinXP (Installed on the Secondary Master - a 40GB HDD).

The BIOS picks it up, so does Knoppix (God bless bootable linux ;-)), but WinXP doesnt want to know about it.

Now the boot loader is on the 6.5GB HDD, and it partly boots Win2K when chosen (It hangs, Im guessing at the same place).

So, Win2K begins loading off it, Knoppix likes it, so does the BIOS, but not WinXP.

Any ideas why?

Many thanks

Chill.

224982 2004-03-25 04:53:00 The reason that it hangs on mup.sys is that the hardware changed, mostly different CPU (I'm guessing you changed from Intel to AMD or vice versa). For some reason WinXP when installed on one manufacturer installs special code for that CPU, which hangs when used on the other manufacturer's products...

Anyway, about the hard drive, have you checked with the computer management tool in the adminstration menu? Selecting Storage->Disk Management, you can manage partitions etc

224983 2004-03-25 04:57:00 The drive doesnt show up in the Hardware Manager, nor Disk Management.

We _dont_ want to format the smaller 6.5GB that isnt showing.....

And it went from 1.2 Ghz Duron to 1.6Ghz Duron... New mobo though....

224984 2004-03-25 05:29:00 You must have formatted it without partitioning it. That probably left the first few blocks as they were ... so it's looking for a W2K which isn't there.

Try partitioning it ,then formatting. Thuis will probably mean a recovery operation to install a boot manager for the XP on the other drive.

as far as i can understand it you formated the 40 gig and installed XP on it. the 40 gig is the on secondary master.

take the 40gig and put it on the primary master and the 6 gig on the secondary master. see if that helps.

224986 2004-03-25 06:23:00 Win2k is there.. It begins booting it...

Win2k is on the first HDD (the 6.5GB one). We DONT want to format this because it contains on or two files we want off it still. I could do Knoppix, but I'd rather not just yet...

WinXP is on the Secondary Master (The 40GB - The one that HAS had partitions deleted and reformatted).

Why would WinXP not pick it up though? The BIOS does, as does Knoppix?

I'll see about doing that Tweak'e, though I'd rather not make a trip round there just to try this one thing.

Any other ideas? Today just hasnt been my day I think... :p
