224957 2004-03-24 23:58:00 I am going to reformat my son's computer over the weekend (shudder) and reinstall the OS because the thing is in such a mess.

AVG is the current anti virus software on his computer. Is this adequate protection, or are there better free anti virus proggies on the net that I could get for him?

Needless to say my son and his family are on the bones of their proverbials; hence the request.

Thanks for any recommendations.

John

224958 2004-03-25 00:09:00 Both me and my local pc assembler, would say stick with AVG. Its pretty good especially if you don't have the latest and greatest hardware. Dolby Digital (160)
224959 2004-03-25 00:17:00 Thanks DD - they don't have the latest and greatest hardware apart from the monitor, keyboard and mouse :-)

The computer is a hand me down from me - it used to be a back up box.

Thanks for the advice.

224960 2004-03-25 00:19:00 I've used AVG for a couple of years, works fine. Safe computer usage goes a long way for protection too.

I was in a cybercafe the other day and noticed they used AVG. Seems like a sort of a recommendation.

Or could be just stingy :^O

cheers :D

Or could be using the paid-for Pro version

224962 2004-03-25 00:51:00 Pays to use Drive Image 2002 or ghost after a succesful reinstallation that way to restore the image of a perfect system take mins rather than hours and you dont need to worry about finding correct drivers or software cds etc .
have that plus anti virus stuff if needed somewhere

224963 2004-03-25 01:06:00 Thanks Mark, Greg and kiwibeat.

It looks like AVG then. I have Jetstream so I want to download and get all installation files burned onto CD before I go over to the Coast tomorrow - my son has cranky old dial up. So I have Acrobat Reader, Open Office, Mozilla, Winzip etc all on CDs ready for the install after the OS installation.

Good idea about Drive Image. I hadn't thought about that. Will take that too and a pile of CDs.

Thanks everyone. What a great resource this forum is...

Thanks Laura. I favour Sygate Personal Firewall, so I will be installing that - already in the folder ready for CD burning!

Thanks.
