| 224859 | 2004-03-24 08:42:00 | sounds a little hottish........I"ve installed a amd 2400xp+ and it idled at 45 approx.......did you buy a 'boxed' cpu and fan and use the heatsink with tape attached or did you use thermal paste ?......and are you certain you've got that heatsink sitting hard on the cpu and what sorta case fans you got? and what sorta situation your system in...room wise etc...whats the mobo temp ? | drcspy (146) | ||

| 224861 | 2004-03-24 11:30:00 | well. at the moment. my case temp is saying its 37.5, but im not sure if my sensor is laying on anything. i am using th stock standard heatsink. im not getting good air flow becuase of the amount of cables on my PSU (Thermaltake 420W) i left the pad on. wasnt sure, because the AMD manual stress's to leave the thermal pad on. so i put a little Arctic Silver 5 on aswell. |

Oh heck, that was not a good idea . :-( > Try cleaning it off, and just use arctic silver you have The trouble is that he won't be able to just clean off the Arctic Silver and pop it all back again because the AMD thermal pad would probably have melted down quite a bit now and it could be quite a messy job cleaning it all off . Personally I would be worried about leaving it as it is but I think it would pay to wait for the experts to see this thread so that they can say whether it needs to all come off and Arctic Silver applied or whether it could be left as is . In the meantime try and get your case insides a little tidier to improve the air flow - tie up as many leads, etc as possible, maybe change to rounded cables and that sort of thing . Keeping your case cool will benefit all of your components, not just the CPU . |

| 224867 | 2004-03-24 22:27:00 | As mentioned you now have to take the entire lot off,the pad and the gunk you applied. Use some alcohol(not beer,the stuff for cleaning) to get rid of it from the cpu and off the heatsink. Then for best results read the instructions for applying the paste on the artic silver website. Amd does recommend using the thermal pad,however you have ruined that by putting the paste on it. And going 100 percent against AMD's wishes you can get much better results with properly applied thermal paste. |
