224712 2004-03-23 23:47:00 My problem is trying to install Windows XP Home on a fresh system using SATA drives. Setup the drives in BIOS etc OK, but the problem is that Windows just won't read the driver disk during installation (the press F6 thing). Even going through the installation from floppy disk set, it still won't read any drivers from the driver disk. Message says: "This disk cannot be read because it contains an unrecognized file system".

Any ideas anyone??

224713 2004-03-24 01:04:00 Not the first time I have seen this question asked here at Press F1 or on the net.

First thing is does the XP Setup detect the hard drive?

Does it offer to partition / format the drive?

If so then just install XP and install the drivers from the supplied disk when the install has finished.

If the F6 method is not finding any drivers on the disk then they are not needed.

224714 2004-03-24 01:35:00 Well I did do a search of PressF1 for a solution first, but I'm not thinking I have a hard drive detection problem.

XP setup does not detect the drives. The instructions that come from manufacturers web site say that the third party driver disk is required to load Windows XP OS onto a Serial ATA drive. I've download the latest version and still have the same problem.

It seems to me that Windows installation should be able to load a menu of drivers available from a floppy disk anyway, whether needed or not - thats my issue. That is what it is failing to do. The question is, why can't I access the drivers from the floppy disk?

224715 2004-03-24 01:51:00 Dunno if it would be of any help or not since I'm no expert on these things but check out this thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) and in particular the comments:

I had problems getting XP to realise it was supposed to recognise the Sata drive and that the boot files were on it.
This was solved by doing a bios flash. Brand new m/b with inbuilt Sata and a bios that wanted IDE.

224716 2004-03-24 02:28:00 Fire-And-Ice, thanks, not a bad idea. I was wondering about the BIOS too, but turns out I've got the latest anyhow. I'm wondering now if it might be a conflict with IEEE or USB onboard support.

But what does "This disk cannot be read because it contains an unrecognized file system" mean? It's just standard files read normally by a number of others PC's, presumably in a format that WinXP install can access info from. Got me beat.
