224641 2004-03-23 13:13:00 im looking at upgrading and am stuck on the same old point of AMD or Intel.

Im aiming at a quiter system than my current althlon one, so im considering a P4 2.8Ghz, ive heard they are quieter out of the box than an athlon?? Or would i be better of spending the difference on a solid case and a silent psu??

Also, any recommendations for a P4 mobo around the $200 - $250 mark?

Im considering a gigabyte model based on 865PE chipset. GA-8IPE1000 Pro2 i think.

Any help, ideas, suggestion will be greatly apreaciated.

Same goes for case aswell, but i want to stick to a tower.

224642 2004-03-24 08:54:00 P4s (in my opinion) run cooler, and therefore quieter as you don't need such a good fan.

P4s are also currently cheaper than Athlons.

Asus make very good motherboards.

meaning power/blowiness/speed, not quality :D

224644 2004-03-24 09:22:00 Asus P4P 800 about 210-220 dollars nice board, nice features and very stable even when overclocked. Lots of good reviews of this board just do a google search.

GA-8IPE1000 Pro2 is also a good board, I just prefer Asus.

Any of these boards combined with a P4 2800 and stock fan and you'll have a quiet system.

A thread on decent cases was posted recently.

224645 2004-03-24 09:35:00 Get a new Intel Pentium 4 2.6 Ghz Prescott ($287.66+GST)
With this, get a Asus P4S800MX Motherboard ($89+GST)

And you'll be blown away. Expensive does not mean good.

I'm looking at getting this combo myself :D Waiting for the financial support... :p

224646 2004-03-24 10:10:00 The fans on the Prescott chips are WAAAAAY noisy... I wasn't impressed when I heard one.

And I am an unashamed Intel fanboy too.

224647 2004-03-24 12:06:00 don't get a P4 EE unless u want ur house on fire, they have serious heating problem.

P4P 800 is a good board, the newer one even comes with wireless LAN : )

When u get a P4 make sure u get a 800 MHz FSB one.
If u want quiet cooling, nothing can compete with water cooling ^^, but if thats too much I guess u ll just have to find one of those silent fans.
