2004-03-25 22:44:00 | > As a matter of interest did you flash the BIOS for a particular reason or just because you thought an update would be in order? Jack had to upgrade his BIOS due to problems with his SATA drive . If I remember correctly you no longer have your older computer, do you Jack? Was just wondering if there is another machine that you have access to in order to try the scanner on and be sure that it has actually died . I tend to agree with Billy that you could possibly be jumping from the frypan into the fire if you go and purchase a new scanner and the same problem occurs . It could have died on you given its age but I would have thought it would just stop working completely if it had, not start being tempermental like a hard drive might . Then again, I could be wrong . This one is a toughie! :O

2004-03-25 23:22:00 | BM. My m/b is a revision 2. It did not fully support a SATA drive. It was necessary to do the flash to get my hard drive to work properly. Which it now does. I did it fully two weeks before this scanner problem arose. I am satisfied there is no connection. Jack

2004-03-25 23:26:00 | susanB. Are you related to BillyT ? ;\ It could probably be fixed, but I'm getting fed up with trying. My concern now is wether to buy on line or to go into town and see what rubbish DSE have. And what to buy. Jack

Can't say that I blame you . I just hope that a new one will play nicely, that's all . It ought to since its drivers should be fully compatible with Win XP, etc . > My concern now is wether to buy on line or to go into town and see what rubbish DSE have . And what to buy . Go and check them out . And don't forget what I said about the software bundle - make sure it has the best software for your needs . I'm still not sure whether you do mainly OCR or picture scanning but most of them seem to concentrate on photo/picture scanning rather than text and the software reflects that . Mind you, I suppose your existing software should still work with it anyway . Good luck . :-) |

2004-03-26 02:38:00 | Is the scanner a parallel port or USB? Had a problem myself where for some reason my parallel port scanner threw a wabbly for no apparent reason which also impacted the printer running through it. It worked fine on another computer running the same operating system and had no similar problems. So I ditched it and bought a USB model. Problem solved. Never managed to find out why it worked on one 'puter and not the other since both were running identical operating systems. Who knows what gemlins lurk about to cause this odd ball problem.

2004-03-26 03:37:00 | Probably a silly question Jack but does XPs equivalent of Win98ses Start Settings Control Panel System Device Manager reveal anything interesting like question marks or exclamation marks? | B.M. (505) | |

2004-03-26 04:58:00 | Have you tried connecting it to another 'puter and if so does it still work? 1. If it doesnt, I would say that there must be some "internal" problem in the scanner in which case ditch it. 2. If it does, then obviously there is some conflict on your computer causing the problem, but another option is to try and borrow another (same model) USB scanner and hook it up to your system. If the borrowed one works then I would say your one is probably good at the bottom of a fishing line. 3. If 2. above doesnt work , try another model. If that doesnt work then I would suggest there is definitely a system conflict somewhere in which case a full reinstall of your operating system may be needed. Good Luck!
