| 224931 | 2004-03-25 20:52:00 | So Jack......... Since removing the scanner software you have had no problems? There can be three reasons for this, only one of which has a sound foundation: 1) The software was the cause. 2) The scanner was the cause 3) By default, not being able to run the software or attempt a scan due to 1 & 2 has prevented the problem from arising. It does not prove which of 1 & 2 was the problem as they are mutually dependent, so 3 is the only valid conclusion. Therefore, you may still waste a small bucket of money buying a new scanner, when it may not be the problem so I'd strongly recommend that you prove the cause once and for all by doing the full reinstallation recommended earlier and see if it all works or if the problem returns. Having fixed it once or twice before you now know what goes wrong so it's not a big deal if you get the old problem back. Just make sure you do all the extra things that you had to do the first time to get your scanner to operate under XP. Cheers Billy 8-{) |

| 224932 | 2004-03-25 21:46:00 | BillyT, Well thought out. I doubt if the software is the problem. Correct softwatre was downloaded from the HP site. This is the same software that I have been useing since winxp was released. The software was on my computer and had been working properly until problem arose Also the software was then reinstalled from my saved file.Problem still there So I downloaded it again from HP.Problem still there. Ergo: The software is not at fault. This tells me that the problem is either the scanner or windows . Windows is now working as well as it ever does. So the problem is the scanner. Also as a new scanner is only about $200/$300, it's not worth playing around trying to fix the old one. I did mention it is about 6/7 years old. I am assuming it has died of old age. Just another thought. What do I do if the problem arises again with a new scanner? :( Jack |

| 224934 | 2004-03-25 22:20:00 | Jack, you say the problem appeared after you flashed the BIOS and that the modem gets lost also. Hmmmm, I wonder if your flashing has the communication ports being misrepresented. :D Like you can fix the problem once the computer is up and running but as soon as it boots from the BIOS the problem is back. (Is this how it goes?) As a matter of interest did you flash the BIOS for a particular reason or just because you thought an update would be in order? :( Like most of the others I tend to shy away from the scanner especially as the modem appears to be involved also. There may not be a simple answer to this one. :( |
