It might be a good idea to start another thread to get the best coverage for your problem as this thread has probably gathered a bit of rust by now. Good luck.

I have read the rest of this thread and advise you to test your memory. I had a computer here to fix which I did and it ran OK for a while then came up with the same message.

I had to change the memory in that computer.

I know you fixed it with a reformat but get your memory tested as you may strike the same trouble again.

Sounds like a good idea. How do I that ?

224848 2004-03-26 22:38:00 Gerry, try Memtest86 (www.majorgeeks.com). Read the instructions carefully. It is best to let it run for a decent amount of time - some people say overnight but the longest I ran it was a couple of hours.

Agent_24: as previously mentioned, start your own thread on your problem since you have a different version of Windows and quite different specs to Gerry. You can refer to this thread if you wish.

Memtest86 3.1a Release is the one you want. It does take a fair bit of time to run as well as there is a variety of different tests it does. Make sure you read the instructions carefully.

Take notice of Jen_C. She knows full well what she is talking about.

I took the time to download the Memtest86 3.1a release earlier tonight and it works here. The release I had earlier did not recognise my L2 cache on my CPU. This release does. :-)

OK. Instructions follow:-

I downloaded the version Jen_C recommended. I then extracted the files from the zipped archive into a directory or (folder) if you prefer on my hard drive. One of the files is called "install.bat" which will be found in the directory you extracted the files to.

Make sure you have a formatted floppy disk available as you are about to create a boot disk.

Run install.bat from where you extracted the files. You will get a prompt from a DOS box asking what floppy drive it should go to. Type "A:" without quote marks.

Hopefully your floppy drive disk will be written to. You will NOT be able to read this floppy. This is normal.

Assuming YOUR computer is set in the BIOS to boot in this order. Floppy, CDRom, HDD then the computer will boot from the floppy if you leave it in the A: drive and restart the computer. It will start up in PCDos and start the Memory test.

Leave this test running a while if you can. Usually memory errors will start showing up after less than two hours. This can take longer depending on processor speed, amount of RAM etc.

If I am not clear here then let me know.

224853 2004-03-28 07:01:00 Thanks guys,

I couldn't get it to work for a start because the bios where set to boot from cd rather than floppy. (re elephants post). Once I got that sorted I
set it at Test = All right up to 11, about 6 1/2 hours in all with no errors showing. So I guess the memory must be ok. Bit out of my depth with this sort of stuff, but we are getting there.

cheers
