224835 2004-03-24 08:49:00 I am having a bit of fun trying to get my puter to start . It is an XP machine .

This is the message I get:

"WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT = windows\system32\config\system . "

I have inserted the origonal install disk to do a repair but it appears I need to know a little bit about dos commands .

If anyone has some spare time (non urgent) I could do with some help . I am currently using my laptop .

224836 2004-03-24 10:13:00 Ummm....... why do you need to know a little bit about DOS? You can choose to Repair Windows XP from the menu that comes up. Susan B (19)
224837 2004-03-24 10:59:00 Hello Susan
I am trying to choose to Repair Windows but I can't make head nor tail out of the page that appears when I press R. & due to my vast lack of experience it looks like a dos command type of page that appears see Imagef1 sal.neoburn.net

Thank you
Gerry

224839 2004-03-24 11:20:00 As you only have 1 on your list of windows installations, just press 1 then enter. Pheonix (280)
224840 2004-03-24 11:39:00 I tried that Pheonix, & then I get a response that says "The command is not recognised" & to type HELP for a list of supported commands which I did. I haven't been able to get any of those commands to work. I should point out here that I am out of my depth here but think with a bit of advise I could possibly get through.

Cheers

224842 2004-03-25 07:42:00 Sorry to hear that you couldn't fix it any other way - strange that TechGuy couldn't fix it either - but at least you have a nice clean computer now .

Thanks for the feedback . :-)

224844 2004-03-26 21:41:00 help!! Stop!!

The same thing has been happening to me......!!!

i have tried recovery console and CHKDSK, and it tells me that it fixed the errors, but if i run it again it tells me they are still there. i tried FIXBOOT too, but it still refused to start. (madness). Anyway if someone can suggest anything, or whatever, then it would be highly appreciated. please note i am writing this on a 33mhz running (just) windows 3.11 and a 14k modem. IT IS NOT FUN!! if i have to download a 25mb thing or something, then yea..... but if there is some sort of command i have overlooked or anything...
