| 224764 | 2004-03-24 00:38:00 | Masterton is having Clearnet and Paradise internet connection problems. In the evenings for the past week or so it is very difficult to get connected. A call to Paradise on Saturday: a recording stated the problem and that techs were working on it. This recording then disappeared (probably too embarassing for business to cope with) but the problem continued. An operator for Clear-Paradise said that a new line was being put into Masterton and that it would take two or three days. When they put in a "new line" is it fibre optics or copper? I don't think broadband (fibre optics) is planned for Masterton until later this year or next year. Has there been any tech news about this, that tells the truth of what is happening? |

Depending on the situation, this means the ISP will either buy themselves more connectivity gear to place at their own POP (point of presence) site, however in an area lke Masterton most ISP's will not have their own POP. A "new line" will most likely mean they are buying increased capacity on the Telecom IPNet circuit - this is the system used by ISP's to provide connection where they don't have their own gear. Telecom allocates a certain number of 'ports' on this system for an ISP - once they are full people can't connect. ISP's basically use the term "new line" as a simple explanation - generally makes it easier for the customer to understand. It may be worth seeing if you can track down an alternative dial-up number for the ISP you are with, as that can be a way to circumvent the problem. |
