| 224648 | 2004-03-23 13:18:00 | Hi ppl, I've just been looking at ihugs satellite Fast 2000 (1Mbps) plan with 2000Mb Inter. data cap @$59.95 mth, versus xtras ADSL Jetstream home 500 (2Mbps) data capped @ 500mb for $59 I prefer the ihug data cap since it's only on international, and the xtra cap would be too small for me, but was wondering if there's something wrong with satelite? Everywhere i look, ppl seem to get ADSL. Is it better in some way? I note that the speed is up to dbl that of the ihug, but 1Mbps should be more than enough... Any opinions appreciated! Thanks (I don't mind the extra setup costs, as this will be long term i hope) |

| 224649 | 2004-03-23 13:23:00 | Well you won't exactly be leaving behind your 56k. The ultra service uses your 56k modem to upload data and the dish to download. Do a quick search of this forum, there have been a few ultra topics in a week or so. |

| 224650 | 2004-03-23 13:25:00 | Satellite requires you to be dialed up and using the phone line still to be on the internet. It uses the 56k dial-up to send requests, then receives the data via the satellite connection, unless they changed it since I was last there. |

| 224653 | 2004-03-23 23:53:00 | I have an Ultra connection; 1mb data cap @ $44.95 / mth up to (they claim) 1000 kb/s, best I've acheived is about 300, mostly in the 20-50 range. It's certainly better than ordinary dial up. But, if I could, I would go for Jetstream as there would be some advantage over one way satellite. Fonterra has a joint venture with Telecom to offer broadband to Fonterra suppliers, but the cost is pretty prohibitive for the wireless option (about $1000 to set up and $139 odd for a 1mb capped serivice) and most suppliers are outside Jetstream range. Apparently about mid year they are looking at rolling out a 2 way satellite service- I imagine that will cost $1,000,000 to set up and $44000 per month . If nothing else is available over dial up, I'd go Ultra. |

| 224655 | 2004-03-24 00:23:00 | 20-50 kb/s on a download (using DAP, latest was downloading ArkLinux). Like I said have got up to speeds considerably better than that... at times. Bad weather can effect Ultra's performance as well. |
