225203 2004-03-25 23:10:00 Hi Team

I recently loaded a couple of progams that dumped an icon into the system tray as well as on the desktop, the system tray being the RHS bottom of the screen and containing the clock . I assume my terminolgy is correct here .

I am not sure what you call the other one at the LHS where I also have quick-launch icons, but shortcuts are easily to delete from there .

I currently have mailwasher icons in both the left and right areas, and Atomic clock is also in both, and I want to get rid of the unwanted iterations .

I had to reimage the HDD on my W98 box yesterday because my AV prgram threw a hissy-fit and wouldn't scan mail or load auto-protect . I had only just added Atomic clock so it was not on my current image, however when I reloaded it, I got a normal icon on the desktop but nothing in systray .

As soon as I opened the program to reset system time it dumped the icon back in the systray, but when I deleted the desktop shortcut it disappeared and didn't come back until I retored the destop shortcut again .

I want to delete that example and one or two other spurious icons that I don't need, but the old "right click/delete" trick doesn't work in that corner of the playing field .

How do I permanently remove these items?

Cheers

225204 2004-03-25 23:44:00 Most of the icons there will be loaded at startup, or will go there when you minimize some prorgams. Also some programs will go there when you close them, i.e. Click the close button or do file close.

Normaly you can right click them and select exit / close or something sounding like that and they will go away.

Stoping them from loading at startup can normaly be done in the programs configuration or if that fails use msconfig, since I assume you are still using win98?

Using msconfig should be the last resort as it can be very tricky to figure out what the name of the offending program is, but normaly it will point to something in the packages install folder.

Handy tip, only disable one thing at a time in msconfig as it will make it easier to fix any mistakes.

To run msconfig: Start -> Run -> msconfig then goto the startup tab.

The simplest way is to run 'msconfig' and uncheck the program that you don't want it to start when Windows starts up.

You may also like to configure the particular program NOT to start when Windows starts up.

225206 2004-03-26 00:04:00 Billy, if you are wanting to remove the icons from the system tray while the programs are still running, some, but not all of them, have an option in their Tools to allow you to do that. Otherwise you are stuck with them until the programs are closed or they are removed from Startup to prevent them running, like the others have said. Susan B (19)

225208 2004-03-26 07:45:00 things in teh system tray are NOT shortcuts.........they're icons representing running applications........... drcspy (146)
225209 2004-03-26 09:29:00 If they don't have an exit function when you right click on them, then kill the process via ctrl+alt+del. Then get rid of it by editing registry or GUI msconfig. PoWa (203)

Yes I know that Perry, sorry but I was careless with my choice of words.

A little more explanation:

There are icons for Quicktime, Roxio Audio Central and Mailwasher present, yet as far as I can tell none of these applications is running. All the rest are programs that I expect to find there as running processes.

Mailwasher in particular is strange as I definitely have to start it up before using it.

Maybe I just need a little more sleep :(

225211 2004-03-26 20:35:00 well as someone else stated use startbutton/run msconfig.........to control what runs at startup on the system...........otherwise 'startup control panel' by mike lin is VERy good........ drcspy (146)
225212 2004-03-26 22:44:00 Spybot tells you what is starting up but Startup Log (home.earthlink.net) is even better. Susan B (19)
