225154 2004-03-29 22:06:00 Good news M & PJ!

Regarding not having SPF on Maryann's computer, I just assumed that as you have both computers networked that you would have a firewall running on both as they are both accessible to the internet .

I do, because my computers are all connected to a router so presumably they are all wide open to the computer . Not sure what your setup is - maybe PJ's computer operates as a firewall for the whole network .

Cheers

225155 2004-03-30 08:26:00 John H. We assumed that Sygate on the Sigma/XP protected the whole network caboodle !!. If this is not so, I would like to know. If the Dell/98se is not protected what should we do?? Put Sygate on the Dell as well? What problems could this cause?? PJ Poppa John (284)
225156 2004-03-30 10:00:00 PJ, I am not sure how you have your network set up. My network - all computers are connected to the router so they need protecting individually.

Perhaps if your "second" computer accesses the internet through the computer that has the firewall installed, then it is not necessary to have a firewall installed? Someone more skilled than me could confirm if this was the case.

When I talked you through the firewall rules, it was on the assumption that ALL computers on your network were connected to the internet through a router or switch. That is the reason why I said you should configure the rule on both computers; so that the firewall on each computer locked out nasties, but allowed you and Maryann to talk to each other.

225157 2004-03-30 10:29:00 John H Only two computers on the network on xover cable & network cards. Sigma=main. Dell=slave.

Just as a matter of interest. When the Dell accesses the Sigma "C" drive I would assume that ALL Sigma stuff would be accessible without specific file sharing. Is this not so?? PJ
