225108 2004-03-25 10:07:00 Article! (www.nzherald.co.nz)

Could be a $10 Million payout. Doesn't sound like quite enough. ;)

Still waiting for the investigations of the faulty usage meter to pan out. That would hit them with another 20mil payout.

225109 2004-03-25 10:21:00 And in other news (www.nzherald.co.nz), Microsoft ordered to pay US$606 million fine for monopoly abuse.

Wow this is 2 great strikes in one day, can we ask for anything better?

225110 2004-03-25 10:55:00 ummm how bout a free copy of Longhorn for every F1'er and a free 2Mbps uncapped broadband connection for 1 year.

That should compensate in the meantime for all the aggrevation that's been caused.

:)

cheers

Trust me, you dont want that... They have a lot of work to pull out of their asses between now and the 2008 release...!

225113 2004-03-25 11:36:00 If Telecom get fined (for a 1998 issue), guess who pays in the end?

Us.

Either directly or indirectly as Telecom seek profitability from all aspects of their operation. It could be in staffing (we pay in tax for welfare) or in services provided (higher telephone network costs) etc.

One way or the other, all these cost will trickle down. Where do you think the $ come from, the shareholders don't dip into their pockets...

So I fail to get excited by such actions.

225114 2004-03-25 11:55:00 well no matter what,we will pay a premium for MS products, its not like they drop the prices when the banks overflowing.

Maybe its meant to discourage futher acts of such a fashion?

Isn't that what punishment for unlawful acts is all about?

Now i know there are those of us who knock ms constantly, and those that think its a free market so let them be,but surely some must be able to see that when entire nations are handing out 600 million dollar fines to a company then maybe MS are indeed already far down a path that needs to be halted.

They're a good company and have made some good products in their day, but their products need fixing up (WinXP for example) before they work on the next release (Longhorn).
And stifiling the competition (RealNetworks, WinAmp) cant be good...

I'd love to see Windows bundled with WinAmp!

Chill.

225116 2004-03-25 12:18:00 Personally i think WinXP and Office are excellent products, computing wouldn't be where it is without MS.

However i am amazed at what they do to other companies, other technologies and their attempts to tie a personal users PC in with MS philosophy.

225117 2004-03-25 12:26:00 (Sigh) And to think I let out a breath of relief on Tuesday night - after having heard the Microsoft news several times on RNZ during the afternoon & seen it twice on TVOne that night....all without anyone starting a jubilant anti-MS thread.
By yesterday - when it was in all the newspapers - it was already getting to be old stuff. So where have you guys BEEN? Or is it just me who thinks news has to be new?
(I ask this is the nicest possible way, of course. Smilingly with a rueful shake of the head...)
Now you're going to tell me you're too busy on computers to listen & look elsewhere, aren't you?
(Shakes head in sorrow, then barricades computer against arrows from North & South)
