2004-03-25 09:10:00 | Hi all. I've been hearing rumors taht my exchaneg is being planned to be upgraded to supprt ADSL. I have a few q's regarding jetstream - c if its worth getting my hopes up! 1. Whats the max distance you can live from the exchange to get an OK connection? (and how can i find out exactly where they are?) 2. Do all the prices on sites include ISP fees? ie, on the orcon site - the 10GB surf plan is $60 a mnth - does this inclde the ISP fee? If not - how much are ISP fees I was looking on the orcon site - www.orcon.net.nz ANd its got the JetStart 5GB and 15GB plans - but when i look on the TC site - i can't find anything about them. Is this option still available? 3. Oh, and is 128k ok for online games? thats it for now. Thanks Alex

If not - how much are ISP fees well, 60 bucks or so is Telecoms fee, and you'll see listed is orcons fee 9 bucka or something a rather. >Is 128k ok for gaming yeh its good, better than 56k anyway.. >Max distance? its about 3km, depending if there a booster thingy somewhere along the way |

2004-03-25 10:41:00 | Hey fergie, If JetStream 128K, your fees is $30 on your Telecom account no matter what and the ISP fees is whatever you choose. So if it's $10 ISP fee then you'll pay $10 a month to the ISP and $30 on your telephone bill. If you choose Xtra, then it's $60 on your bill, $30 Telecom and $30 Xtra, Xtra being your ISP fee. You could still possibly be able to use ADSL, an external router is more reliable if you are outside the recommended distance. I wouldn't know the ratio of how well it works, and whether it's only some routers but I know a few people who were outside the recommended distance but still were able to use ADSL. Noel Nosivad

2004-03-25 12:15:00 | why not keep with paradise?? get them to check the distance. you might be able to get it further than the usual 5km limit however thats only if you have got good lines. if your dailup is poor then kiss adsl goodbye.

2004-03-25 12:28:00 | Hey fergie, Sorry, JetStream, JetStart are both considered the same type of service just different speeds and could be or might not be available to you, but it's possible you can get it still using external ethernet router (should have mentioned ethernet). The pricing for JetStream is quite confusing, 10GB for $60, now that seems cheap, but at what speed? It's even too cheap for 256Kbps but too expensive for 128K unless it's the total cost of ISP + Telecom Fee. That seems about right. Jetstream you pay for however much you want and the speed determines how expensive it'll be e.g. 1GB limit, your limit/traffic is used up by anything you do on the internet, uploading/downloading, JetStart is only for downloading traffic only.

2004-03-26 10:32:00 | Just watch your usage. Paradise usage meter tells me I used 4.5GB for 3 weeks but the Telecom usage meter tells me I used 17GB. Queried with Telecom and they say it is a problem with Paradise as there software has nothing wrong with it and is correct. So I have stayed on the Jetstart plan which keeps me at 128K both ways because even if I went to the 10GB I would be down to a 64K speed both ways within a week. I would have no hassle being cut back to 128K after 10GB but 64K is just plain crazy.

2004-03-26 10:51:00 | I think there is something wrong with Telecoms meter. According to my ISP, I use about 400mb a month, but according to Telecom, I use 900 mb per month. That is what it used to be, but I think it has been sorted out now, I do not know.
