225387 2004-03-27 02:07:00 Hi All

When I have previously 'backed up' my data files - *.xls, *.doc etc - to CDR they become Read Only files, NOT what I want when I restore the ones I need.

Is there a method where these files can retain their Archive attribute when being burnt to the CD? It's a nuisance copying the file(s) off the CD back to the computer's HD and then having to change the Read Only attribute of the said file(s) so they can be edited.

Thanks
Chris

225388 2004-03-27 02:43:00 Files archived to a CD will have to be set as read-only, because they cannot be changed on the CD.
The CD is a read only medium.
Even a CD-RW is read-only, but ultimately eraseable.

Things could get ugly if Windows "assumed" it could perform read/write operations to a file on a CD....

You can get many free applications such as this one (www.freewarehome.com) to "bulk change" attributes when the file is copied back to the HDD though.

225389 2004-03-27 02:59:00 Using xcopy to get files off the CD can fix the Read-Only attribute. Otherwise, if there are a lot of files, the attrib utility is intended for this. :D attrib -r c:\where\the\files\are\*.* will do a whole directory. Try attrib /? and see if the /s option is available ... that would do all subdirectories too. Graham L (2)

Are you sure your files are still read only once you have copied them back from the CD to your harddrive? Mine are not.

225391 2004-03-27 06:10:00 well that's weird oxie cause mine are that's how it is.......you 'copy' the file .......the file which has 'readonly' attributes........and when you copy it of course it has readonly drcspy (146)
225392 2004-03-27 07:31:00 Mine are also all read-only when copied back to the hard drive from CDs.

'Fess up Oxie, what's your secret weapon?! :D

I wish I knew, but believe me when I copy my files back from the CD to my hard drive they are NOT read only. Perhaps Godfather can explain the reason. I use Nero to copy the files to CD.

225395 2004-03-27 11:40:00 The only time I have seen files left marked as read only after being copied off a CD is when I have accessed the CD via a Network Share.

All other times files copied off CD have been editable with no problems.

225396 2004-03-27 20:40:00 Thank you, whiskeytangofoxtrot. I am glad I am not the only one. However, I wonder why some people have files marked as read only and others of us don't.
