This one interests me.

I have been known to use more full stops than the normal English written word would suggest you use.

In my case I have been using them as a long pause to allow people to think. Possibly I have got into this habit from years of posting back in FidoNet days. I might add here that FidoNet is still alive but not very well.

Maybe I could use the "Enter" key between my points so that people could think while scrolling down quite a bit. :-)

I could even use the "Enter" key quite a lot but I would think that would be more annoying than a few full stops.

Therefore I will refrain from the Enter key unless of course I have to use it to create a paragraph.

Just possibly we should ALL (on this forum) get to the point where we cut and paste all Messages into a word processor then do the reply and spell and grammar check everything.

I try to get the correct spelling and grammar here but have certainly done more than a few typos.

Personally I don't like the Spell Check on this forum as it doesn't understand words like ( FidoNet and realise ) for example. Just maybe we will have to learn the American way of spelling. In a few years we may all have to learn the TXT way as well.

I wish you luck with your learning.

I don't know a lot about computers, but I have no problem using Zone Alarm and it almost never acts up. In my view it is easy to understand what ZA does and how it works.

Perhaps whiskeytangofoxtrot you were to impatient to carefully read the setup instructions?

225451 2004-03-27 19:17:00 Bruce Buckman this is for you ...........if you happen to be offended by my last word............I'll just say I'm sorry but I MEANT every letter of it......yes I know Im not supposed to say such stuff here and normally wouln'd t even consider it but that whiskeytangofoxtrot is getting my goat........why dont you ask him to refrain from commenting about me at all ?...........that would be very nice thanks.
If you want to get my attention this isn't the way. I do not check all these threads, which is why the RULES thread clearly states people should email me if there is a problem and provides a link to my address. In future I would ask everybody to do this and not start flame wars.

The Dial up windows appears on bootup but does not try to connect

225453 2004-03-27 22:30:00 Go to Run, type in msconfig>startup..and have a look at whats listed there.
Also check to see if some program is wanting to check for updates at startup.
Best of luck.

I have no problem at all using ZoneAlarm, it isn't me I am referring to. I have several years of IT background and am still working full-time in the IT industry. My understanding is fine.

I posted the above because I spend a good portion of my day dealing with people that have installed ZoneAlarm on reccomendation of a "friend" or even worse a "technician" or "friend that knows all about computers"

These are the people ZoneAlarm is a hassle for, they don't understand what it does, how it works or what the messages mean.

The program _is_ buggy, it regularly forgets it's settings, blocks programs that have previously been allowed access etc.

I would estimate I have dealt with well over 1000 calls related to ZoneAlarm problems - hence my reluctance to see it implemented unless the person using it understands what it is doing and how to operate it. The majority of people have enough trouble understanding that they need to update their anti-virus software let alone trying to manage a firewall.

At the end of the day for the average dial-up user they connect, get their mail, check a couple of web-sites and disconnect, their IP addresses are assigned at random so the chance of getting "hacked" and needing a firewall is next to nothing. Never mind the fact that any real hacker isn't likely to waste their time trying to hack across a dial-up connection.

You'd be lucky if I had posted in maybe three threads you've been involved in .

I challenged your suggestion, and chastised you for ridiculing Jim B's post . At no time did I stoop to your level and start throwing around childish insults of a PERSONAL nature . It's quite easy to see who is the bigger person here .

If you can't handle having your opinions challenged then I suggest you unplug your internet and return to something safer like Indoor Bowls . This is the internet it's a public environment, people are going to have differing opinions to you, build a bridge and get over it . There is no need to go running off to hide behind the skirts of the moderators .

Might I refer you to the rules ( . pcworld . co . nz/thread . jsp?forum=1&thread=40651" target="_blank">pressf1 . pcworld . co . nz) which prohibit personal attacks .

If you can justifiably voice an opposition against my opinions or technical postings then by all means go ahead, I'm more than adult enough to handle it - but there is no need to resort to personal jibes . I don't individuallt attack you, I challenge your opinions - grow up .

If you are going to quote rules, try sticking to them yourself . Granted, drcspy's language was unacceptable, but there was a clear intention to insult him in your post too:

"Yup, but you reccomend using system restore to fix settings problems so we won't talk about that . "

Grow up the pair of you -- Bruce Buckman

Right, so as not to have this thread completely de-railed as some people can't control themselves... lets get back on topic.

The dial-up box will come up if something/anything requests internet access, it will only connect if you have connect automatically selected, otherwise it waits for you to hit connect.

Have you tried running SpyBot and/or AdAware? It could be some kind of malware causing it.

Is your virus scanner up to date? If your virus scanner wants to update it can try and force a connection.

Do you have any programs that would use internet loading at startup like MSN Messenger, ICQ etc? These obviously could invoke an internet connection.

Have you tried Jim B's trid and true fix of unticking "check for revocation" thing? As this is a very common cause of the dial-up box coming up if nothing else appears to be prompting it.
