225414 2004-03-28 02:23:00 Just to save you a bit of money regardless of your choice, try an online shop like www.pp.co.nz or the likes rather than DSE, have a look on www.pricespy.co.nz for some other prices and shops too. Good luck with setting up your network too! poss (5448)

Not if you use the ADSL router recommended earlier, the Dynalink RTA300 as it already functions as a "hub".

Why do you want a cross-over cable? I think we should clarify just how you would like your network and ADSL internet sharing to work.

1. You can have each computer (up to 4) sharing the ADSL internet connection. A external modem/router acts as the internet gateway, so each connection is independent of the other and it does not matter which computer is currently powered on. All computers only have a single ethernet cat5 cable going directly to the modem/router. All computers can share files between each machine via the modem/router with no other cabling required.

File sharing:
laptop ---- router/modem ---- desktop

Internet sharing:
laptop ---- router/modem ---- www
destop ---- router/modem ---- www

Equipment required:
- externel ADSL modem with router/switch capability - Dynalink RTA300 ($250) or DSE XH1149 ($169)
- cat5 cable(s) (straight through)
- Network cards (if not already installed) although the laptop can use a USB port to connect to the modem/router instead.

2. The desktop computer will have an internal ADSL modem or will be attached to a external ADSL modem (not a combined modem/router). This desktop computer will be the gateway to the internet. The laptop will share the ADSL connection by going through the desktop (internet connection sharing ICS). For the laptop to access the internet, the desktop must be running. File sharing (and internet access for the laptop) is achieved directly between the two computers via a cross-over cat5 cable.

File sharing:
laptop <----> desktop

Internet sharing:
desktop ---- ADSL modem ---- www
laptop ---- desktop ----- ADSL modem ---- www

Equipment required:
- Internal ADSL modem ($97) - XH1137 DSE or external modem (price varies)
- cross-over cat5 cable
- Network cards (for ICS/file sharing) plus the gateway computer will need a 2nd NIC to handle the external modem if it uses an ethernet connection (think this is correct??).

I just used DSE products as an handy example, there are other products and sources which may be cheaper.

I forgot to mention earlier that you will need a ADSL phone line filter ($20) for every phone jack in the house except for the one the modem connects to.

Whilst the cheapest option is to have an internal ADSL modem and use ICS between the two machines via a cross-over cable, this does limit your options for expanding the network and you have to have the gateway computer powered on if the laptop is to use the internet. The modem will not function as a hardware firewall.

Using an externel ADSL modem with router/switch capabilities will give you much more freedom in accessing the internet and adding on additional computers to the network. The modem/router will use NAT (the modem has the external IP assigned to you by the ISP and it redirects the traffic to a different private internal IP's for each machine) which is a very good security feature.

I would recommend if possible to use an external ADSL modem/router to handle the internet and file sharing in one hit.
