225578 2004-03-28 04:09:00 have just got a mac G5 tower (duel 1.8Ghz) in the house.

how do i set up things like file/print shareing with windows?

is there a way to set the mac to be an internet gate way for the wondows systems?.

i can set ICS on the windows system and set the default gateway/router on the mac to point to the windows system and that works but i want it the other way around.

i am sure i will have many more mac questions over the next few days.

thanks for any help.

225579 2004-03-28 04:24:00 If it's running OS X, there should be no difficulty. It should run a proxy (like Squid) without noticing the load.:D Graham L (2)

I'm not sure whether Mac's have the same ability to function as an internet gateway straight out of the box, you may need some third party software (though what exactly I couldn't tell you).

File and Printer sharing shouldn't be too much of an issue, I haven't worked with Mac OS X directly for a couple of years so I'll be a bit rusty, but it's in Control Panel, Internet and Networking, Sharing from memory.

I think you'll really enjoy the new machine, my experiences with Mac OS X just after it came out just blew me away, it's a gorgeous OS to use.

225581 2004-03-29 11:31:00 Go into System Preferences -> Sharing, Internet button.
You might need to assign a static IP to your ethernet adaptor.

If you really want to have fun with your lovely new Mac I suggest you install the BSD subsystem and X11 packages from your install CD, then download the X11 SDK from Apple Developer Connection, then you can install Fink:
