225439 2004-03-27 06:12:00 you most likely have spyware...............goto www.zonelabs.com and download zonealarm........this'll tell you wht app is trying to dial up and also goto www.lavasoft.com and download 'adaware' this'll hunt out then remove any spyware........ drcspy (146)
225440 2004-03-27 08:21:00 It is unlikely to be to be spyware and you don't need zonealarm.

With Internet Explorer open go to Tools/Internet Options
Click on the Advanced Tab
Scroll to Security, Uncheck "check for publisher’s revocation certificate"

225441 2004-03-27 09:47:00 Don't know if it's related to your problem,
but the same was happening with me after running the update disc from m/soft.
Had a couple of other unwanted extra's added to startup at the same time.
Fixed it by unchecking...xuwu, in startup.
No problems since.

225442 2004-03-27 09:54:00 jim yep sure that is a potential fix....................but.............you say 'it's unlikely to be spyware' lol well ........I can tell you from experience that it's VERY likely to be spyware.........LOTS of spyware dials or tries to dial up .............and zone will tell you what it is thats trying to access the net.....and 'you dont need zonealarm' ......well I'd reccomend it for ANYONE unless of course you run 'norton internet security' in which case it can conflict......... drcspy (146)
225443 2004-03-27 09:55:00 btw........my own system has that 'check for publishers cert' thing ticked and it dont try to dial up EVER by itself........ drcspy (146)

Yup, but you reccomend using system restore to fix settings problems so we won't talk about that.

ZoneAlarm is more hassle than it's worth for the majority of dial-up users, it is buggy, is fails, and most people don't understand what it does or how it works and end up breaking their system.

It has it's hooks so far in the TCP/IP stack that it will still leave it's settings in place even after uninstallation requiring a fairly sizeable amount of registry editing etc to get it working again (or of course system restore could be used).

The check for certificate revocation is a common cause of a computer dialling up on first boot, even Microsoft report it in their knowledgebase.

Jim also has a damned sight more experience than you could probably ever hope to have.

And use less dots, you'll wear the key out - how about learning to paragraph?

Do you see any other programs that load up which could invoke an internet connection, like MSN Messenger, File Sharing Apps etc?

How long has it been happening for? Did something to change recently that might have started causing it?

Do you have an up to date and active virus scanner? Have you run SpyBot/Adaware to check for malware?

225446 2004-03-27 12:11:00 I will second the notion that zone alarm is more hassle thatn worth to the majority of dial up users. Everybodys so quick to recommend it like its the greatest, get over it!!! jupi8 (4244)
225447 2004-03-27 12:32:00 Hi Dumdum
I know you've already posted about the firewall on the M/S free CD, but am interested in the unwanted extras the update disk left in startup...?

It'd be good if you'd post those details also in the review thread - prompting others to check & delete if necessary. Just a thought...
