225751 2004-03-29 03:53:00 here's my problem
I have 2 pc's, 1 uses winXP and the other uses win98
they are joined by a crossover cable and i did the wizard and troubleshooting and EVERYTHING, on both pc's, but found 2 problems

1: win98 dosent have the right driver, and allied telesyn dosent either (allied telesyn AT-2700TX 10/100 pci - they gave me drivers for newer models)
2: i found a win98 driver that ALMOST works, but the ping was wrong and the pc's would only recognise themselves in their workgroups, not both of them even though they are connected in the same workgroup
3: i found that now they wont ping at all after trying the allied telesyn drivers (thanks alot allied telesyn)

so thats my problem, or atleast 3 of them
it should work if i find the right bloody drivers
you may find another message posted by my friend regarding the driver

IF ANYONE CAN FIND/CURRENTLY HAS THE ALLIED TELESYN AT-2700TX DRIVER FOR WIN98 TELL ME BEFORE I SUE SOMEONE OR CHUCK THE PC'S
(windows CAN make a pc go faster - just drop the pc out a window)

225752 2004-03-29 03:59:00 what do you mean "the ping was wrong"??

quick fix might be just to pay $25 for a new network card that has 98 drivers.

225753 2004-03-29 04:25:00 This might help:

225754 2004-03-29 04:57:00 alternatively, as someone else suggested on a different post, dont buy cheapo cards. go somewhere reliable - Eg: DSE.

www.dse.co.nz

would probaly be appropriate.

Slightly off-topic, but what is the actual difference between "el cheapo" cards and more expensive ones? I ask because as a result of a recent networking issue I replaced one of my cards with a $13.50 one from TL Systems, and it seems to be working fine. I believe you usually get what you pay for, but what am I actually paying for in a >$100 (or $200) card? Is it just better drivers, or is there more to it?

it a lot more than just drivers.

some cards will give better speed due to better parts used in the making of the card, a number of cheep cards give trubble simply because they havent been tested as much before tey are sold.

225757 2004-03-29 06:37:00 mE, run the AT setup and diagnostic utility from a floppy (in DOS) without any drivers installed . You can find the specific utility, quick guides and manuals and card assistant here ( . alliedtelesyn . com/support/software/details . aspx?pid=172" target="_blank">www . alliedtelesyn . com)

BTW, I was under the impression that Allied Teleysen was a goodish brand . I've had 2 or 3 DSE Realtek (chip) cards go west on me for no apparent reason but for $20- odd dollars what do you expect .

225758 2004-03-29 09:39:00 Oh. well everything in computer hardware (except for one thing) that i bought from DSE is and has been going fine. havent had much problem with DSE. i mean - Two USB mice from QMB died within the first week. but the one i have now, from DSE has been going perfectly for months. agent_24 (4330)
225759 2004-03-29 09:56:00 Here's a better link for the DSE card

XH7975 (www.dse.co.nz)

Those DSE network cards at $16.00 have been great for me. I see other brands (3com springs to mind) at more than 4 times this amount.

What I like about DSE is that they will willingly exchange or refund if it doesn't work, and they usually have links on their site to drivers for what they sell.

225760 2004-03-29 13:40:00 I'm not really knocking the DSE cards (I'm using one now :) ) I don't expect too much from a cheepie and can't justify the $100- + cards on a simple home network. Actually I'm not sure how the manufacturers can justify the price of the latter.
