| 226396 | 2004-04-01 03:48:00 | The "www" is just a name. A lot of sites which are WWW sites use that as the name of a host in a domain. "www.something.blah.tld" is an indication that the particular "fully qualified domain name" is hosting a web server. But it's not compulsory. The domain in this example is "name.co.nz". The "http" is the name of the protocol you are using to access that host. The "www" has no effect on the choice of a protocol. In fact, the final address used down in the bowels of the network system looks like "123.221.111.010:80" . The only restriction is that a fully qualified domain name is unique. |
