226310 2004-03-31 21:02:00 The latest issue of PCW, back page, lists Google as Chokin. Why? Is there something better or is Google not as good as it used to be?

226311 2004-03-31 21:16:00 Some tests found Altavista and other SEs doing better so the goss is that Google's days are numbered and also what with MS bringing out a supposedly super-dooper SE built into it's next OS, Longhorn.

I have been hearing about Google's pending fall since it's great rise and the news seems to come and go and I still use it all the the time.

Others will have someting to add, maybe about Google's feature of ranking sites by popularity not being the same as accuracy, but *sigh" Google still does it for me. Have a look at the NZ Listener, was and article in there. Cheers.

The Listener....??

Mark... Is there something you're not tellin us ;-)?

Personally, I find Google does all I want. There do seem to be more and more ads on the side, but that's the way they keep their business afloat I s'pose.

When do MS plan on adding this Search functionality into Longhorn? I havent seen it...
Chances are it'll just be a little applet for your taskbar. There are already similar applets for Linux Desktop Environments.... Good to see they're keeping up with the times (Well, will be.. four years from now when its released...)

So Altavista is one to try?

Chill.

Mark, what SE's were better? Do you have a URL for the results?

226315 2004-03-31 22:31:00 Strange as it may seem, AltaVista can in fact be better on occasion, such as getting a more specific result by using the advance features.

But Google's a hell of a long way from being beaten, even by it's upcoming rivals, eg MS.

226316 2004-03-31 22:39:00 I think it might be a reference to the fact that the next windows version will have searching built in. A bit like what happened with IE and Netscape, possibly.

226317 2004-03-31 23:15:00 I have to do a lot of research and use Google pretty much exclusively, but I also have Copernic Pro which I use on the rare occasions when Google doesn't find what I want. Copernic uses a whole raft of SE's, but never seems to find anything important that Google might have missed. What it does find is various obscure references that don't add materially to the search result, i.e. the sites were not popular because the information available was of limited relevance.

Google still outranks all other options for me.

Smokin', not chokin' :D

Cheers

226319 2004-04-01 02:00:00 Overall I still find google to still be very good, but they really need to do something to prevent their search results getting hijacked.
Depending on what I'm searching for it is not uncommon for the first 10-15 results to be faked (ie advertising).
