2004-03-31 19:00:00 | This is more or less a continuation of my post "have I wasted $115" After trying everything suggested I decided windows XP might be faulty so I reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled XP. With just XP plus necessary drivers installed I tried MS Flight again. It stopped in exactly the same places as before. I carried on installing my other software and SP 1. My computer was running well and everything worked. Then I tried to install MS Office XP. The install started off well but then locked up with the message about being unable to copy from cab1. Next I tried Norton A/V 2003. Half way through it stopped with the message about error and "Do I want to notify Microsoft" I fressed NO and it continued. But half of it had not installed. So I tried Norton A/V 2002. It did exactly the same thing. Message at exactly the same place. At least this proved it was not faulty CD. While uninstalling 2002 a message flashed on screen about "Faulty windows installer and missing xxx.dll. It disappeared before I could read it properly This morning I tried MS Flight, Office and Norton. None of them will install. Can anyone suggest something? I am toying with the idea of deleting everything and starting again from scratch. Note: Windows installs without any trouble. So the problem must be within windows after it is installed. Jack

2004-03-31 20:20:00 | No. My temp is always around the 32 mark. With the Sata hd it runs quite cool.Time seems to be not a factor. | JJJJJ (528) | |
2004-03-31 21:07:00 | How old's the machine? Faulty PSU's can cause some very weird and inexplicable problems | Greg S (201) | |
2004-03-31 21:13:00 | Another, of many possible causes, can be a faulty memory module. Try downloading and running Memtest86 to eliminate this possibility. | Pheonix (280) | |
2004-03-31 21:21:00 | My comp is only 3 months old. I have just had my new scanner delivered. An HP 3670. The installation software will not install. Received message "Error 1335 cab file albump~1.cab is corrupt and can not be used" This ties in with all the others. My comp will not install from a cab file !!! Adobe Reader from the same disk installed without a hitch. Why will the comp not install from a cab file????? Jack

2004-03-31 21:26:00 | Start looking at the RAM . If the RAM is faulty installing programs is often where it gets picked up . Strange that you could install Windows itself without problems though . If you have more than one stick in your computer try removing one and see if it helps . If not, swap with the other stick and try again . If still no improvement give Memtest86 a run for as long as possible (2 hours+) .

2004-03-31 22:18:00 | Any of these installations using Installshield by any chance? Certain Installshield files/versions and windows installer can go bad. What was the last successfull install you did before the error presented. One of your programs may have a bad file on it which is foulling it up for all successive programs that use windows installer and/or Installshield. It could be as simple as an unregistered dll file but, finding the right one can be a nightmare. Not very helpfull I know but might get you startrd in the right direction. Cheers Murray P

2004-03-31 22:22:00 | Here's my checklist . . . 1 . Motherboard drivers installed? 2 . Cables all inserted properly? 3 . Tried different CD-Rom for installation? 4 . Tested ram for faults yet? Failing all that, it could just be a faulty motherboard . . . ? Lo .

2004-03-31 22:46:00 | Jack, is this the same machine that had a BIOS that wouldnt recognise the HDD so you flashed the BIOS? Then it wouldnt recognise your scanner, and reloading the software for your scanner disconnected your modem. Now, another programme wont work and a new scanner is no better than the old. Just thought it might be helpful to confirm the background and ensure were talking about the same machine. If its the same machine and being only 3 months old its had a rather chequered start hasnt it? :) Might be time to see the man you bought it off and see if you still have a warranty? :(
