226630 2004-04-02 08:32:00 I bought a compaq from Warehouse Stationary about three weeks ago, and thought I had better get the updates updated, and just told it to install everything it thought it should. Dumb me. I couldn't access any webpages. Checked all the web settings that I know, everything looked ok, but still couldn't access. Tried yahoo messenger, yep, fine, clicked connect on ie, yep, modem booted up, connected, and wouldn't go anywhere. So my question is, any idea wnat not to install so I can get these darn hotfixes at least up to date on this new puter. TIA supergran (108)

226632 2004-04-02 09:10:00 Thank you, I did search around here, but there was too many posts, that didn't really relate. Will go now. supergran (108)
226633 2004-04-02 09:15:00 Zquerty, I have the cd, I installed 'all' the updates it said to update, then I couldn't access the internet. I now know how the restore function works on xp, it is great. Took it back to yesterday, before I loaded the updates, and hey presto, I am back.

My question was how do I know what to install, cos obviously, installing 'all' the ones that they say, makes the system not work. well the internet anyway.

226634 2004-04-02 09:28:00 Ok,

Sorry Supergran, I did not understand what it was that you meant. You will have to wait for others to run into this problem and see what solutions they come up with. I have not received my CD yet even though I have ordered it three times and got confirming emails back, but anyway I would not be able to help because I am on Win98SE and Win2K and I don't know much about XP, although I suspect your problem will be in IE6SP1 which I too have had problems with and fixed by repairing it by going to the 'remove programs' in the operating system and selecting the repair option which comes up when you ask to delete IE6. Although I have not done this on XP and it may not be the same.

226635 2004-04-02 09:39:00 I did see a I E 6 sp1 thing in there, so I might search through the updates again, when the update windows thing comes back, cos I told it not to remind me again for three days, and untick that one, and see what happens. I do have the option of unticking different updates, but stupidly thought that it might know what it was talking about what I needed, so just clicked 'instal all'. Now I know better. LOL As for system restore, I love it. That is one part of xp that I love, that I didn't have in 98se. But thanks for replying anyway. supergran (108)
226636 2004-04-02 11:37:00 Chances are there was just one or two settings wrong in Internet Explorer that would've been easily corrected.

Although I am yet to hear of any of the Security Fixes causing the problem described.

226637 2004-04-02 22:47:00 If the update CD installed the firewall and anti-virus try doing the updates without allowing those two items to be installed. Susan B (19)

The AV and Firewall are on a separate CD, and are not "installed" as part of the updates . Its a separate and deliberte act to install them so I think its unlikely to happen without you knowing .

Ah.... thanks for that Godfather. I am still waiting for my CDs so haven't had the pleasure of exploring them yet. :-(
