226538 2004-04-01 08:47:00 Hi,

I'm new to computers and have just bought a computer running windows xp and have just started getting an error message in a box called Runner error...it says Invalid backweb application Id 1940576. What is this and how can I prevent it from popping up all the time. Also please tell me where to turn the internet firewall off...I have just installed sygate.

Thank you

226539 2004-04-01 11:09:00 First off a very merry welcome to press f1 .
In regards to your error I think that you'll find you've picked up some spyware . Just do a google search on that error number and a few links will come up that you can read about .

Download and run Spybot or Adaware and that should get rid of it . You can find more info on this by searching the FAQ's .

Alternatively remove the backweb application if you can by going to add/remove programs in control panel or remove it from startup by running msconfig, (type msconfig in the run command box under the start menu) clicking on the startup tab and deselecting backweb .

To turn off the XP firewall go to network connections under the control panel . Right click your internet connection/properties then under the advanced tab untick the internet connection firewall (although this is off by default so unless you turned it on before, it should be off) .

Hope that this is useful for you .

226540 2004-04-01 11:50:00 backweb is often a legit program. its used for update drivers/programs for various companies, however i've never found it to be usefull. i would just uninstall it. tweak'e (174)
226541 2004-04-01 20:30:00 Thank you for your help . I took off all the programs running off the start menu except sygate, avg and trogen remover . . . . . there were about 20 things running . I also downloaded spybot and adware . . . . . and got rid of sypware (9 things . . on adware and heaps on spybot) The firewall was checked so have now unchecked that . . thanks and after re-booting the message isn't coming up . . . thank you .

Also can you please tell me about standby, rapid resume and the monitor switching off . My computer is set so after 15mins it goes into standyby . . . . . . is this the best way to have it set?

Thank you for your help, I would be lost without this site .

226542 2004-04-01 21:22:00 Glad that helped. Im not sure what you want to know about the power settings you are talking about.
Standby does just that, puts the computer into standby mode. Saves you from having to wait around while it powers up and also saves power. I usually put my computer into standby mode overnight just to save power but find I have to reboot it every few days as I start having problems. One of the joys of windows.
You can set the standby time to what ever suits you. There is no "best practice". Its good to have a screensaver enabled to prevent screen burn as well. I have my monitor switch off after half an hour.
Rapid resume? Never heard of it. Im wondering if you mean hibernation??
As far as I understand, hibernation is when the computer takes a copy of everything that is in RAM and copies it to the hard disk and then goes into a standby like mode. When you turn the computer back on it copies everything back into RAM.
I have never found this to be particularly reliable and would recommend against using it.
Have a nice day.
