| 226869 | 2004-04-03 09:07:00 | Hi there o' knowledgeable ones While I'm at it ...Whats the difference between a graphics card and a video card? I have a NVIDEA GeForce4 MX440 128MB DDR in my system which is about 2 years old. My mother has just gotten a 2nd hand computer and looking under 'display adaptors', she has a NVIDIA geforce4 mx440 (doesnt state how many mb) Looking inside the cases, the cards look different to each other, and I was expecting an older card in hers. So....are there different versions of the MX440 and....myself spending most of my life playing online games, is this card I have, quite crappy, and would I notice a big difference with an upgrade? Is 128mb normal...or are they more these days? Many thanks in advance for your input! |

Do yourself a real favour and get a life away from the PC... :) But to answer the question, it depends what your PC specs are, as the card may not be your constraint. But you don't say what your specs are, so... |

Here we are talking about a CARD as opposed to on board video. > I have a NVIDEA GeForce4 MX440 128MB DDR in my system > which is about 2 years old. Why are you expecting an older card? The computer may be older but updated with a better video card than it had originally maybe. Looking inside the case may not help as there a few manufacturers of AGP cards all of which use the Nvidia GPU > So....are there different versions of the MX440 Yes. > and....myself spending most of my life playing online > games, is this card I have, quite crappy, and would I > notice a big difference with an upgrade? > Is 128mb normal...or are they more these days? > Many thanks in advance for your input! You can buy a card with more RAM like 256 Megs but I don't think that will be a good idea. You will better off in my opinion to buy a very good AGP card with 128 Megs rather than a crappy card with 256 Megs. Bear in mind that I don't play online games at all. Having said that I would expect that online type games may be more dependent on your internet connection rather than the graphic or video card. Here we should worry about what games you play and where the server is. Try a google search for "latency" or "ping times" What games do you play online? |

| 226874 | 2004-04-03 10:14:00 | well, I'm just playing age of mythology mostly, but next week santa is bringing me a jetstream connection, and finally I'll be able to compete with a reasonable ping on some counter strike style games. Thanks for your comments! | Mcpisik (4924) | ||
| 226875 | 2004-04-03 12:23:00 | Grahics cards, video cards aew indeed the same item, when it comes to the g4mx their are 3 basic models, the 420,440,460,they are available in many configurations as far as onboard ram, clock speed, cooling and are produced by many diferent companies. 2 cards that have the same name can vary widely when put through their paces. While im on the subject you can (could) get nforce 2 motherboards with intergrated g4mx chipsets built into the board, and there is a laptop version as well, maybe called g4MXgo. You mentioned online gaming,in many instances its nesacery to lower graphic levels when playing online to compensate for lag, many online games are optimised for this reason and don't look anywhere near as good a a game that is built primarily as a single player game. Best bang for your buck at the moment is eaither an ATI 9600 pro/XT,or a nVidia FX5700,both i have seen for under $300 in some places and will give you a huge whack of grunt compared to the g4mx,which i might add is based on the geforce2 card from many years back. |

| 226876 | 2004-04-03 19:33:00 | Awesome Metla! I'll take a look @ the cards you suggested. Thanks heaps If I end up with one of those, would it be worth replacing my fathers nvidia tnt2 card with my mx440? (Since it will be spare) Cheers! |

Most definitley, the mx440 is far far more powerful then the tnt2 card. |

| 226878 | 2004-04-04 01:07:00 | The MX440 would be pretty sweet for any games that are not new - I had a Gainward/Cardex MX440 64MB and that could overclock to the max - to be honest when I upgraded to a Ti4600 128MB I hardly noticed the difference (except at higher resolutions) - however if you wanted to play any new cutting edge DX9 games with bump mapping and pixel shading you would be out of luck. | HadO (796) | ||
