1359875 2013-11-14 22:39:00 JB HiFi have 2.5GB Seagate externals for $109. Would be the cheapest way to buy large drives for internal installations wouldn't it? And you get a free case as well!! Good for attaching drives for testing. linw (53)

That aside, it depends, some manufactures hard connect the internal drives to the external case circuit board, so they cant be changed anyway.

1359879 2013-11-14 23:34:00 A monumental saving of $4.85! And they're only 1TB, so don't really qualify as large drives. A 3.5" 1TB drive should be under $100 normally anyway ($85 at Playtech atm for example). Then you have to hassle of having to pull the drives out of their caddies, and probably break the caddy in the process... sorry, not sure what the thought process behind this idea is, but it doesn't stack up. inphinity (7274)

USB2.0 will be the bottleneck long before any a decent modern drive, even a 5400rpm one. For example, a WD Blue 2.5" 5400rpm drive can exceed 100MB/sec in sequential transfers. USB 2.0 will top out at around 35MB/sec. USB 3.0, however, can supports upwards of 300MB/sec, so the drive will become the bottleneck.
