1359760 2013-11-13 18:23:00 Article here (motherboard.vice.com): How Long Can You Reasonably Expect Your Hard Drive To Last? *Mechanical HD's.

*Read also the comments below the article (click twice to read the entire Comments section); the last comment has links to two academic papers on HD failure rates.

Apparently SSD's can fail also, according to one of the comments.

1359761 2013-11-13 18:47:00 Yep, HDD's can and do fail at ANY time. SSD's are no different, ANY storage device/ Media will fail one day its just a matter of when. It could be a week old or 10+ years old, but one day it WILL fail.

That's why you have backups.

1359762 2013-11-13 20:11:00 "According to Backblaze, about one in 20 hard drives fails in the first 18 months"

Really, I find that hard to believe, we would have been getting ALOT more failed drives returned from PC's & HD's we sold if that was true.
Google released an analysis a while back, they use more HD's than anyone. Their results did however show the manufacturers MTBF was BS.

1359763 2013-11-14 01:29:00 Had 2 brand new seagates DOA out of 3 just last week!.... SolMiester (139)
1359764 2013-11-14 02:50:00 2 WD Blacks replaced in a few months. Don't remember the reason but some photographer's said they don't trust SSDs for photographs long term archving and said they preferred mechanical ones.... Nomad (952)
1359765 2013-11-14 04:00:00 Had a bad run with WD Blacks quite a while back, out of 5 drives, 4 failed within a month of being installed :( wainuitech (129)
1359766 2013-11-14 06:26:00 Over the years...some brands had massive failure rates, others not too bad.

But hard drive failure is common, it's an electromechanical device so not too surprising.

SSDs? Yep, bu their nature, of course.

Hard drives and power supplys are what I have seen the most with PCs.

That's why techs bang on about backups so much.

1359769 2013-11-15 02:31:00 HDD failures are definitely the most common problem we've seen in the workshop lately.
Often the customer doesn't even know the HDD is failing but we always run HDD tests now, before we do anything else, on every machine that comes in.
No point spending time trying to fix an issue when it could be caused by a failing HDD. :D
