1359294 2013-11-10 03:53:00 I've been creating a website for a few years - using front-page and am now moving into CMS Responsive Design as want to enable mobile functionality - but as I'm a complete newbie at this - I'm unsure at to how to approach this adventure - I've had a play with a few online web builders (wix.com and webnode.com that automatically create a mobile site for you - but doing it that way, you're only renting space/builder off the hoster.... even though they do what I want....apart from backing the site up to computer incase of hoster downtime or moving to a new hoster...

The Website is only 6 pages in size - but it has a significant photo gallery of approximately 500 photos in 8 sections (yearly galleries) and will be always added to over the years...

I've looked at Joomla - but I'm not sure how to approach this software - and I keep getting confused with its mobile website capability...can it? can it not?

Not a fan of wordpress - so won't go down that track....

I was suggested crazy domains.co.nz which seems quite good but again... it is a web builder and you're the renter...

If theres software available I can actually download to create a mobile responsive website on my computer it would be awesome and I've got access to both Mac and Windows systems if software is only available for 1 or the other...

Hope there is some suggestions please :) - The website will have a .co.nz domain as well :)

Thanks for your Time :)

1359295 2013-11-10 03:57:00 Personally I would do this using responsive CSS, but that is a rather hands-on approach and I'm not entirely sure what your skill level is. pcuser42 (130)
1359296 2013-11-10 04:00:00 if thats all about code writing then thats beyond my level :( as I'm stuck in the dark ages with HTML knowledge - am starting to wonder if I should just become a renter? as along with posting here I've been googling and exploring ideas on the internet. pcnoob83 (17172)

Ah yeah, afraid I can't help you then as I tend to write code manually :p

1359298 2013-11-10 04:52:00 I think i'll go with Joomla as it seems to have the backup option and seems quite good to use - just gotta learn it quick smart me thinks...

will have a play with that but if anyone has other suggestions I still want to know :)

While there is NO simple fix to making a website responsive, there is a template you can start with. You can download the mobile responsive boilerplate from here. www.initializr.com After that you may want to go through the CSS and remove all the code that you don't want and then add in your own code. Make sure you leave all the media queries in the bottom of the CSS

Or you could go and download a responsive template from Wordpress.

Have a read of this - there's a bit to get your head around
coding.smashingmagazine.com

When I learned it, it took me about a week. Some people leaned it faster.

Either way you will need to code your own CSS.

Before you start you will have mapped out a mobile to iPad to desktop wireframe ( 640px to 786px to 960px) or 960px down to 640px depending on where you want to start from. Personally I find it easier to design from mobile and go up, but thats just me.

I use iPad as its the most commonly used tablet for web browsing and all the one that most people are using when they buy stuff online.

If you don't do a wireframe to start you are going to get lost very quickly when you start coding. When you do your wireframes it helps to build your page on a 960 Grid so that you can work out your measurements and margins.

As to web hosts, I use 24/7 mainly because they were suggested to me.

You can do the base part of your responsive design using the responsive view in Firefox but once you get going I find it better to upload it to the server then work remotely while viewing the site on my phone or iPad. For remote coding I prefer to use Sublime Text 2 with an SFTP plugin which makes coding changes a lot faster to do and allows you to work directly in the server via Sublime

I normally build my sites on a Mac and then use Windows for testing in IE.

Just out of interest, how good are you at math and CSS3?

1359300 2013-11-10 21:04:00 Did you use CSS to style pages when you were using MS Frontpage? ( which by the way is a horrible way to be introduced to web coding/design standards)

Ideally you would use a basic code editor and a web browser or something like Dreamweaver and a web browser. :)
